| I think its a fair question. There are good examples either way. Look at paige of zeppelin and morrison of the doors. They didn't play an instrument, and they ruled. But then look at dave matthews, ben harper, anastasio of phish. All those dudes played guitar while singing. Whats you opinion? |

| Each band is different, so each band needs something that works for them.

| Yeah dude, it depends on the band. If the the lead singer can add something, let him do it. My favorite bands usually have everyone singing at one time or another. Generally its who wrote it is who sings it. But it really dosen't matter to me. peace and much love |

| Unless the lead singer "is" the band......meaning the musicians would still be in the garage without him/her,the answer is YES! Singers are 10cents a doz. Showmanship, ability to move any audience, and Class, take as much dedication as some instruments. If you got a lead singer with good vocal chords, and nothing more, than that's just what you got! bleu.End world hunger

| Well, I guess I will extend my knowlege upon you since I happen to be the lead singer in a band....(wipes fist on shirt) In a way, you are all correct, if the singer is just that, a singer, then you've gotta play up your instruments more, or get a new vocalist. However, if the vocalist moves around, gets the crowd going and can still manage to sing well (or interestingly) then the band doesn't have to be so good. | |

| "if the vocalist moves around, gets the crowd going and can still manage to sing well (or interestingly) then the band doesn't have to be so good...." ..you haven't fronted for too many bands have you...don't worry...your attitude will either change about bands or you'll learn to go solo... ...have a cookie..just a hint, skip the chocolate chips, chocolate is a unless you enjoy slinging phlegm into the the mic that is.Mama Budz * I Toke & I Vote * | |

| Sorry to stray off topic....but MamaBudz kinda hit a string. No, by interestingly, I meant like, you don't have to be the best vocalist in the world, but as long as you kinda put a twist on it (one band that comes to mind right now would be NOFX, Fat Mike can sing normally, but for some songs he does crazy things (Kill all the White Men) And another thing, why would I wanna front for a lotta bands? I've only played in three and I play bass in one. If you front a lot of bands during your career it kinda looks like you are doing something wrong. | |

| I think the point that mamabudz was trying to make (please forgive me if I'm putting words in your mouth) is that no matter what the lead singer does, the band still has to be good. Personally, I don't care if the lead singer is a gymnast, I don't go to shows to watch someone jump around and do a bunch of crazy antics, it's about the music. A singer, like any other musician, should pay attention to the music first and sing his parts in a way that fits together with what the other band members are doing for whatever sound they're trying to create. I find it interesting that the singer is sort of apart from the other guys in the group. All the other guys are the band, and then there's the singer/frontman person. Why? Singing well is just as hard as playing guitar or drums or anything else. The band, every member, has a common goal while onstage, to come together to create music. Every member should do whatever is necessary to make that music the best that he possibly can. Sorry for the ramble, when i start talking about music, I kind of get that way. |
