Deadhead is so right. I don't know if theres anyone else who did whatever he wanted through his whole career. The man walked away from C,S,&N when they were at there peak! If anyone can listen to either The Needle and the Damaged Done or After the Goldrush without tearing up does not have a soul. And he has kept writing good music the whole time. His latest album, Silver and Gold, is really good. Its slower, the songs may not be as memorable, but its still good. Great acoustic chill music on a lazy summer Sunday. I will close with Neil, paraphrased, talking about the song Heart of Gold: "That song put me in the middle of the road, but that got boring so I headed for the ditch. Its tougher going but you meet more intersting people along the way."

I remember learning how to play "Needle And The Damage Done" in guitar class in high school. Simply awesome tune.

Neil put out a lot of great stuff, and a lot of bad stuff that was rightly slammed by the critics ("Trans", "Landing on Water"). I recently got his "Freedom" CD, featuring "Keep on Rockin' in the Free World." Good tune. I hope he stays consistently good. I also like when he does songs that make fun of record companies and artists who "sell out" their music to commercial jingles:

Ain't singin' for Pepsi,

Ain't singin' for Coke,

Ain't singin' for no one

Makes me look like a Joke......

Default Neil's the man!

There's no doubting that, definitely my absolute fave solo artist (pi$$es all over Dylan from a great height IMHO). Here's what Neil I've got:

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
After The Goldrush
Harvest
On The Beach +
Tonights The Night
Zuma
Ragged Glory

>> my faves to listen to stoned are EKTIN, Ragged Glory and On The Beach + this is a v. hard to find album as it has no official release, altho I have a rather tasty boot

Keep it real, keep it Neil...

Thumbs up Flashbax...

Dylan created a generation of music, and that can not be taken away from him.He spoke for people that didn't even know that they could speak,at a time when no one had the courage to speak.
I still have a picture of Bob Dylan singing beside the reflecting pool in Washington D.C.,'The Times,They Are A Changin'.'Even Neil Young knows his place on that scale.Dylan is the poet of an generation. No one,in my humble opinion, compares to Bob.
This generation produced some of the greatest song writers and musicians ever, but Bob Dylan led the way,my friend.Quite simply, the greatest.

Dylan is the poet and Young is the minstrel.

Neil Young has been far more consistant in his releases than Dylan. After Blood on the Tracks, what Dylan is there? Neil started in the late 60s and put out great stuff all through the early Nineties. I think that part of his survivability lies in the fact that he was never too political in the 60s sense (although he is very political, he knows that these times they are a changin), and thus his art didn't die with the 60s. He is one of the most well grounded people and he has been able to adapt to the changing decades. "The wooden ships were just a hippie dream."

Cool Well yeh

I do know the words to more Neil Young tunes They really didn't even come on the scene in remotely the same way....They don't sing the same messages,IMHO the only thing the two have in common,is their music appeals to "us",and ....they both still perform."PERMANENTLYSTONED"b.suede

My dad, Gene LaFond, opened for Neil Young at the Bridge Benefit Concert in um...1992 i think...

My dad sent them a demo tape and the people at the Bridge, this organization run by Neil Young to help disabled victims, said that they wanted my dad to play and so they flew him down to California for a week to play at this concert.

He also opened for Bob Dylan here in Minnesota a couple of years ago. One of his friends went to high school with Dylan and has the first ever recording of Dylan on an old album.

Try and top that Neil Young story!

Having a hippie musical dad rocks....
