| My bro got me into them. They kick ass. I'm not sure what album its on but theres this one song that kicks my ass everytime I hear it. Its really fast with all these weird breaks. Be careful, when really high it may feel like your heart stops with the music. Don't worry, the music wil start again.

| Thank you thank you thank you! finally someone else who appreciates Mahavishnu! If you liked Birds of Fire, pick up their first one The Inner Mounting Flame. It blows Birds of Fire right outta the water. It's faster, in odder time sigs, and altogether crazier. Also pick up From Nothingness to Eternity (I'm not exactly sure of the title) and the Lost Trident Sessions, those are the only other 2 albums with the original lineup. It's amazing to me how John McLaughlin was able to find Billy Cobham, the only drummer manic enough to be able to keep up with his guitar. Oh, and that song schwadood was talking about is Noonward Race. Crank that one to 11.

| Hello! Oh yeah, Mahavishnu is really good stoner music. Especially for Billy Cobbhams insane drumming, actually the more I think about it everyone there are truly insane. For me the original lineup with McLaughlin, Hammer, Laird, Goodman and Cobham is th only true Mahavishnu Orchestra. Are there any other people here who is into jazz. I myself is more into this fusion thing, but anything that gives a good vibe goes. Has anyone heard Cobhams solo stuff, Focused is really good. |

| I've got Spectrum, which I really enjoy, but that's the only solo Cobham I have. You know, my only complaint about Mahavishnu is Rick Laird is far too white of a bass player. He's damn good, but there's a couple tunes that would be so much better if there was a more funkified bassline in there. But that's my opinion. I love jazz, but don't listen to near enough of it. As you can probably tell by my avatar, I'm a deadhead so I love improvised music. As far as jazz goes, I love Miles, 'Trane, Weather Report, Chick Corea, Tony Williams, I could go on. I too lean a little more to the fusion side of things, but I love the acoustic small band stuff too. I can listen to Kind of Blue all day, or I can listen to *****es Brew all day. In fact, I think I will! |

| Laird not funky enough? too white?!?! no my friend, no indeed you are wrong. the best part about mahivishnu is getting an unitiated potential fan blow out of his gord, sitting his lazy stoned ass down on the couch give him a bag of munchies a cherry coke and throwing on "one world" off of Birds of Fire. Wait, listen, chill, don't talk and when the bass solo comes up say "is that bass player white or black?" 11 times out of 10 your unuspecting friend will turn to you with a 'get with it' look on his face and say those fateful words "oh!, he's definiately black" and then you say "no dude, he's white" and watch the shockwave pass over him. |

| You sure? hehehe, maybe I'll have to give that one another listen, but he sounds a lot more white to me than say Stanley Clarke (just to name one cat off the top of my head). Just not enough slap in there for me. Or maybe it's there, but I'm too busy being mesmerized by John's lightning fast guitar work to notice ![]() BTW, there's a bass solo in "one word"? man, I gotta start paying more attention, I remember the drum solo vividly, but completely blank on the bass. Maybe it's because I used to play drums and I would usually be concentrating on that.....like I said, I'll give it another listen sometime soon. |
