| Between the three decades of the 70's , the 80's, and the 90's, which produced the best pop/rock music? i will reserve my opinion until i feel inspired to join in. i left out the 60's because the beatles, the rolling stones, and acts like that were groundbreakers whose acts are pretty much impossible to top. my thread begins the assumption that the 60's was the best in the last four decades. we are looking for number two of the last four decades or number one of the last three. | |

| I gotta go with the '70's. The '80's are disqualified for having Flock of Seagulls and hair bands. The '90's were good until Kurt died. 1972 was one of the best years in rock history. Led Zeppelin was touring to support Led Zep IV. The Who released Who's Next. The Dead released American Beauty (I know it never charted but it is a classic nontheless). Pink Floyd released Dark Side Of the Moon. Derek and the Dominoes released Layla. The Stones released Exile on Main St. (I think. If it wasn't 72 then it was around then. And Stcky Fingers and Let It Bleed, possibly my fav Stones albums were released around there too). David Bowie released Ziggy Stardust. And thats all in one year! Throw in Lynrd Skynrd (I just realized I've never had to spell that before), Steely Dan, The Doobie Brothers, the Allman Brothers, I could go on and on but I think you get the picture . . .

| gotta be the 70's. cool stuff going on there. but i think butt rock and stuff like metallica and the like were the redeeming factors of 80's rock. it was just overshadowed by the poppish flock of seaguls/duran duran type crap. the 90's had some cool rock too, not so much rock really, but more of the alternative movement. alice in chains, stp, soundgarden, smashin pumpkins, to name a few. but the 70's had the jethro tull, pink floyd, styx, bad co., supertramp, etc., etc., etc. my vote definately goes to the 70's. | |

| For the type of rock I listen to (PUNK), its the 90s. Bad Religion released Against the Grain, Generator, and Recipie for hate; while NOFX released Punk in Drublic (hehe), So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes, and The Decline. Pennywise released a number of great albums then as did Anti-Flag. Maybe that stuff is a tad too non-mainstream for this post..oh well.

| there was some bad music in the 80's but wasnt there some good music too? when people bring up the 80's why do people who dont like it always name flock of seagulls. they were a mediocre band. not great but not awful. same with duran duran. you seem to forget acts like the police, the pretenders, elvis costello, the clash, the fixx, the eurythmics( who inspired marylin mansons remake), etc. thats to name a few. i cant believe that somebody named styxx. i think it was spade. if styxx is the best of the 70's i'd hate to see the worst. did you see the behind the music on styxx? a critic in the 70's said one of their albums was comparable to a parking lot full of whale vomit. thats being generous. another said they were "schmaltcy" | |

| I'd definatley have to go with the 90's, although the 70's does come close. As for the 80's they were pretty cack in general. I think the fact that I was in my early-mid teens for the whole "grunge" thing is the deciding factor. The best years of my life, MTV was actually good then. There's also a lot more good bands from the last 5 or 6 years too, so yeah, come to think of it the 90's thrashes the pants off of every other decade for me. Although I would rather have lived in the 60's/70's |

| I vote on 70's. My dad has a bunch of cool stories from his college time. Look at all these names all of them in one decade of pure rock n' roll: Pink Floyd,Led Zep, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Iron Butterfly, The Who, The Doors, Stepenwolf, Beatles playing their newer and cooler stuff,Mutantes and Raul Seixas (last 2 are brazillian). Even Kiss had some good stuff then The 80's are crappy: Village People, Duran Duran, TinaTurner. The only band i remember now from the 80 that i like is DEVO, They got some really cool tunes. Oh dont forget Red Hot Chili Peppers, probably the best band from the 80's. Kiss went down hill during theses years. What about Van Halen, they are from the 80's and those were their best years and U2 too altough their are coming back now The 90's: Well the 90's pretty much change the music industry. Nirvana, Pearl Jam,Rage Against the Machine,Korn, Cardigans, Crambarries, Marylin Manson are some bands i like a bunch of others too that i would take at least 2 hours to name them all. Their is a lot of what i call "industrial waste" during these years (Britney Spheres and Co.) Thats all i can name right now

| You make a good point Clufoot. Every decade has its good stuff and they have the ****ty stuff. The '80's had their good stuff too. Elvis Costello, the Clash, Dire Straits, Guns 'n' Roses (kind of like a hair band but they managed to sound good too). The '70's, though, all those were classics. |

| to doritos man: the question was not which decade had the best groups. it is which decade had the best music. if someone was unfamiliar with the beatles discography, and you said the beatles was a group that released records in the 70's, that person might think " oh. if the beatles are part o the 70's then thats got to be the best decade" you tip the scale with their name because it carries a lot of weight. but its deceiving because they only released one album, i only know of one single off of that album, and its not considered their best album by any critic i have ever heard. if this was about which decade had the best groups, the 70's would win easily. but this is about best music. you say the 80s were crappy but then you mention marylin manson who has remade or wants to remake several 80s pop songs. he remade " sweet dreams " by the eurthymics, "tainted love" by soft cell, and he wanted to remake " church of the poison mind" by culture club. i dont know if he ever did. you say the 80s suck but artist you like seem to admire 80s pop. the guy who helped marylin manson get his career going , trent rezner, started nine inch nail in the 80s. that industrial gene started in the 80's with nittzer ebb and groups like that. or the style exploded in the 80s. once again, everybody seems to remember the tina turners of the 80s but not the new orders or fishbone. what about the j. geils band. ministry, the cure, men at work. thats what i remember. | |
