Cool Oysterhead

Anyone heard of Oysterhead before? It's a new supergroup with Les Claypool from Primus, Trey Anastasio from Phish and Stewart Copeland from the Police. Grand Pecking Order's the new album and it's great! "Mr. Oysterhead" is an awesome tune that's been on the radio around here recently. If you like Phish, I'd reccommend picking it up.

I have the Oysterhead album, and I do like it, but I thought I'd dig it more than I do. I'm not a Phish fan, and the album is a little too jammy for me, for the most part. A lot of the time it sounds like each of the dudes is just doing whatever he feels like at the moment, and luckily the result wasn't horrible. And for having such a talented drummer, the drums don't stand out at all, which is quite disappointing.

But I don't mean to rip on it at all. It is good, and it does get some listening time.. And I would looooooove to see them live!

So, I would definitely have to back up your recommendation, Smokey. (Is that name supposed to be like Hootie McBoob or whatever Homer wanted to call Marge? hehe)

And if you're a Phish fan but not too familiar with Les Claypool or Primus, and you dig Oysterhead, definitely check out Primus. (See the Primus thread here)

I saw them in Ann Arbor during their tour (which is now over. Trey will be doing a tour and releasing an album with his own band during the spring/summer). I thought it was alright. There will definetly not be another band like that around anytime soon, if ever. Copeland thoroughly impressed me and my bro, who is a former drummer. Maybe he just had more room to open up live. I'm still not sure if I like the band, really. Trey is always amazing, Les is great, and Copeland is no slouch either, but they don't really come together to make a sound as well as Phish does, or Primus (or Colonel Les Clayppol and his Fabulous Flying Frog Brigade). But the jams were interesting. If it wasn't for the jams it just would have been like seeing the record live, plus Immigrant Song. That would have been pretty boring. At best it was fun, and at worst it was interesting. All I got to say is hiatus sucks!

Oysterhead was definitely an interesting experiment. Like many heads, I'm still not sure whether I liked it or not. Les' voice starts to get on my nerves after a little bit, and I like bass players who are a little more technical. I think Trey should've gotten more lead vocals, he only has 2 or 3 songs, I think.

I had a good time at the show though, it wasn't the spiritual experience Phish is, but it wasn't intended to be. I have to say I disagree about the album being "too jammy", I don't recall any songs that really open up into some extended improvisation. Stew rocks the house live, he was a madman behind those skins. Honestly, he made the show for me. I know what Les can do, I know what Trey can do, what the hell is stewart doing?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure Oysterhead's probably done for good now, maybe an album or a tour in a few years, but with how busy those 3 guys are, I highly doubt they'll be getting any time to put into oysterhead anytime soon.

I agree, I would've liked to hear more Trey songs. I'm not a huge fan of any of the three bands, but I do like them.

I saw Oysterhead on the show Reverb a while ago. I thought they were pretty interesting. I should've taped it and saved it for when I got stoned. I think it would be pretty awesome to see them live if you were stoned with all the lights and Trey's guitar effects and all. I am a big fan of Phish and Primus also.

By the way, does anyone else think its kind of strange that members from Phish, Primus, and the Police would get together and put together a CD and go on tour?

Yes I do think its weird. A few years ago Les and Trey decided to get together to do a concert as oysterhead. Trey and Les getting together isn't all that strange because Les already broke into the jamband scene with Colonel Les Claypool and Fabulous Flying Frog Brigade. Plus, Trey has jammed with everyone, from MMW to Widespread Panic, from Son Seals to Kid Rock. They were just kicking around names of drummers they liked and someone mentioned Stewert and he was available. So they did that show (I think it was in 99 but i could be wrong) and did the album and tour when phish went on hiatus.

5/4/00 was the date at the Saenger (sp?) Theater in New Orleans. It was during JazzFest that year. If you're never heard of New Orleans Jazzfest, it's basically the holy grail for any music fan. Funk, jazz, jambands, blues, old school, new school, they call come together for a couple weekends of amazing music (I've never been).

My brother described the story pretty well, Les and Trey have been friends for a while (I know Les and Larry LaLonde from primus sat in with phish at least once, on 12/6/96), les said to trey, "okay, what drummer do you want to work with more than any other?" Trey said stewart, they played the one show with a lot of hype and buildup. The tapes are in massive circulation (as is the tape of the reverb show, if you do some looking). Very rough sounding since they had all of 2 days rehearsal time, but there's some good jamming in there. A lot of fat you have to trim off, but it had it's moments.

I think the one thing about oysterhead is there was this huge hype and buildup about it. I heard people saying it was gonna be everything the Trey Anastasio Band wasn't. Completely not true, TAB and Oysterhead are on opposite ends of the spectrum. But what can follow the hype that was around oysterhead? Everyone thought they knew what to expect, but Trey pulled a fast one on us again! He's good at that, ain't he?
