| A Drug is defined(sp) as A: chemical substance, such as a narcotic or hallucinogen, that affects the mind and body. and i feel that music shares thesse same properties (sp?) after all, certain types of music can make u feel happy while other types can make u feel other emotions, some music may even change ur perception on life and they way u veiw it. but there are countless typess/styles of music that can alter peopel in any number of differant ways. i would just like ur guys feedback on this thanks. ![]() (P.S: sorry if i put this in the wrong forum, i was not sure) |

| "chemical substance" Although I do agree that music can change moods as well as perception of thought, it isn't a chemical substance (injested by the user). But it can be quite addicting ![]()

| I agree its like a drug in some ways but no where near being an actual drug....it has no chemical substance, cant treat or cure disease,it dosent alter anything phisically (like certain little blue pills do when old men wanna get it up),it has no side effects (unless its played too lound and eardrums pop, but its not a side effect more stupidity on one's own behalf),dosent make you hallucinate.........interesting idea though....however you could also say just about anything has the properties of a drug though....like cars for example, they can change your life ( man going through mid life chrisis who buys a sports car),they can make you happy(like when you buy it), make you angry(when it wont start) ect. ............

| Man, i like that idea. I also feel it can change your mood, and overall feeling, and it seems to go deeper than the normal world. I would have to disagree with the car theory though, "Studies have been done on plants where loud hard rock music, for instance, killed plants and soft classical music, make the plants grow faster. Music is very powerful, like a drug and can even be an addiction." -some internet site.

| Yes but not really, because its more the way your mind reacts to the music than it altering your brain chemical balance.

| i'd have to disagree with that theory, it doesn't change consiousness and it doesn't have medicinal aspects. however i guess one could argue it realives stress wich woyld go under the lines of mental health so there ya go. but i think everyone agrees scientifically it will never be considerd a drug as it's not an ingested substance but yeh cool theory | |

| Music does change consciousness and does have medicinal properties. I'd recommend Dark Star by the Grateful Dead from Veneta, Oregon 8/27/72 for more information on the consciousness changing. As far as medicinal, I know several music therapy majors, so obviously someone thinks it has some value. Personally, I think music is better than a drug. Makes you feel better than any drug, has no hangover, and you never build up a tolerance. Might have to listen to some Miles every now and then after a day or 2 of listening to Dead and Hookah, but that's fine by me It is, however addicting. I'm a Hookah addict, unable to stop myself from seeing them and trading for more shows. Tomorrow will be 27 and counting!

| I think it can be a drug in some ways. Words too, and a lot of other things. There was some quote, I can't really remember how it went but it was something like, "Words are the most powerful drug made by mandkind." I thought that was pretty cool.

| When I play the keyboard with all of my ability for awhile and keep the music just within the limit of how good I can get w/o screwing up, sometimes I get this rush that feels super good. I don't know how to explain it... it's better than an orgasm or being high though. It goes away as soon as I can't keep the beat going, or as soon as I mess up (but it's almost impossible to mess up when I do it... feeds itself). One of my friends can do this on guitar... maybe this feeling comes with any music, and playing it yourself and doing the best you can amplifies you. I agree though, music is a drug. |
