Yes, it was wriiten as a fairy tale song to Peter's children.

I met Mary in late 97. I was pitching a new ending to Puff, as many folks have in the past.

I found out the answer to that question, though I hadn't asked it appears everyone does and mary is on a one woman crusade to correct the impression that it is a Pot song (has nothing against pot, just that it was a kids song and she feels it's been stolen from kids by "righteous" anti-drug folks.

I have an alternative (happy) ending to the song that while it has been heard and tacitly approved it has, like all the other endings to that particular song "not officially been endorsed by" Peter or the group.

And that's how I know...

Peter, Paul, and Mary were a folk group very big in the early to mid-'60s, contempories of Bob Dylan before he plugged in. Very big in the Greenwich Village folk scene at the time. I'd say, yeah, they probably indulged a little bit.
