| If you buy a grateful dead cd you will have no idea what the Dead are all about. It has got to be live. they were a live band. And frankly, most of their studio stuff is pretty weak. As far as studio albums go,though, American Beauty and Workingman's Dead are classics. A good start is Skeletons from the Closet Now, for live stuff, theres Europe 72 which captures some great moments from one of my favorite years. Live Dead, recorded in 69, is great for their early sound. But your best bet is with the Dicks Picks series. I think theres 23 volumes, all live shows picked by Dick Latvla (I think I spelled that right), the Deads late archivist. Any show is gonna be good quality, and its also gonna be a good show. One of the things about the Dead is that they changed so much over the years, new songs coming into the rotation, old songs being dropped. Some people can tell what year a show is just by listening to it. The other option for live shows is trading. People would tape the shows and most of them, if not all, have been transferred to CD. You probably won't want to get into that yet, I'd start with Skeletons from the closet and a Dicks Picks show (my fav years are 71-74)

| Dick's Picks 18 is my favorite that you can buy. I'd reccomend gettin' into trading, though, for sure. |

| You could go to gdlive.com and download a show or two. Try something from 1972. August 27th is what I'm listening to right now. The only problem I have is that the mp3s on some shows don't convert to wav, but I just put an mp3 player in my car...woo hoo.

| Isn't that playin' wonderful? One of the best I've ever heard (even with donna's screams!). I love that part where it gets all liquid in the middle.

| almost all the time.Penbroke Pines,Fl.. 5/22/77,Dick's pick's Three. I love the "Lazy Lightning" on the first C.D. going into Supplication.Awesome Jerry licks and great vocals by Bob! The second is Dick's Pick's Number Six,Hartford civic center, 10/14/83.The first C.D. has a great set of Greatest Story Ever Told going into They Love Each Other as second and third songs. Oh hell, how can I pick just two? I have a bootleg of a Cleveland show that has an eerie "Black Peter" on it.The whole place was dead silent.A great example of Jerry one on one with the audience. Belive it or not,I have a C.D. that is the demo of the Dead doing studio for the new record company when they switched labels. It came out in a bio-magazine about the Dead a few years ago. The one studio Piece of Dead that I like. I have a bootleg from Europe with a Cilifornia 90's show that is real bouncy and up. 7/13/84.Good party sounds.Dancin' In The Streets....Women Are Smarter... Live Dead has a quality that can't be described. The only band that excel's in the raw and does it's own thing. It's all good,Blaze with me...the best. ![]()
