| Man, these guys suck @ss!!! My friend thinks they are the bomb, so she dragged me to this crappy concert. Not only did the music totally blow, but Peter Tork is the biggest @ss you could EVER hope to meet. Their show was cool, but their music blows. |

| They were a pop band made to be a TV version of the beatles. Only a few guys could even play any music at first. Never wrote any of their own stuff (well, until a little bit later). Then they all started doing a lot of drugs, and the result was the movie "head", a psychedelic masterpiece and a critical failure.

| pretty much, except the monkees started out with the TV show thing and all. They used to call them the pre-fab 4, as opposed to the beatles fab 4. |

| Bailey 1138 sez: They were a pop band made to be a TV version of the beatles. Only a few guys could even play any music at first. Never wrote any of their own stuff (well, until a little bit later). Then they all started doing a lot of drugs, and the result was the movie "head", a psychedelic masterpiece and a critical failure. Most of what you say is accurate, but since when was it a necessity that bands write all of their own music? I am not a huge Monkees fan, but the fact that they didn't write "all" of their songs is a weak argument. How many of his own songs did Elvis sing? Hmm, or Frank Sinatra for that matter. And you state that they didn't write any of their own stuff until a little bit later, well if I recall, even the Beatles did plenty of covers in their early days, and the Grateful Dead had little reservation about playing other people's music either, often at that. As far as the original material written by the Monkees, there is some good stuff there. Mike Nesmith, after he left the Monkees, wrote some of the finest country-rock of the 70's. They could play instruments, sing, and write their own music. And they were pretty good comic actors, at that. | |
