| This thread is supposed to be on 'Lightly moderated discussion of the music we enjoy'. But i have a keen interest in psychology and just wanted to get out what ive had in my head for a while. With todays large influx of 'popstars' and supposed 'boy' and 'girl' bands. i was keen to investigate many things behind this. Here are a few. 1. Primaryily all 'popstars' are young attractive 20 somethings, each one attractive but different looking from the others, all sporting latest fashion and hairstyles etc. And in some cases each person in the band will have something distincly different from each other. For female pop stars such as britney and christina the clothes they wear are minimal, and i think many people just watch their videos to look at their bodies. All popstars are slim, toned and muscular. People think to be like them, they must look like them, but dont realise thats its all part of the contract. When was the last time you saw a 'plump' pop singer. Potential popstars arent chosen on talent, but rather how the producers can manipulate them into fiting into the above. 2. Secondly the songs they sing. Basiclly each sex talks about the opposite, not about troubles about relationships etc, but about how they fall in love, or have a big crush on the attractive boy/girl next door, and eventually get him/her in the end. To me, the lyrics are straightforward as black and white, and also represent a false image of relationships and real life, and they arent even written by the singer. 3. Music videos. Again the stars wil be wearing the latest in fashion, etc. I have also noticed that no matter how many background people there are in the music video, all camera shots are of the face/body or the whole person, but with minimal shots of other people. And that all pop videos ussally follow the same kind of plot. Other things that feature in the video will also ry to draw in the viewer such as, fast cars, money, fancy gadgets and other expensive things most people dont have. 4. Pop stars are in a way 'categorised' from the start eg: britney spears = pop princess, these are ussally changed to gain media attention, just look at Christina when she began and now. This is mos likely done to attract more record sales. None of todays popstars will be round if 5-10 years, there looks wont be suitable for the market. In contrast to what i think are 'real band' speciffically rock music in the present (deftones, tool, radiohead, pink floyd) these bands werent selected by a group of people, they came together naturally for their love of music, and also with the bands of the past, eg:nirvana, beatles, led zeppelin, the doors, jimi hendrix, all these people came together for the music, and had a large influence on it then and still do and are well respected. Their lyrics arent straightforward and leave much to the imaganation. their videos are make quite different from todays pop icons (ecspecially tool videos) For most of them, there debut albums didnt sell millions, but as their music grew so did their sales, fan base and their mark on music. In conclusion, Pop in my book roughly translates to greed, people manipulating people to make the almighty $. This is just my opinion on music these days and i have more things id like to say but dont want to keep you. , i want to hear other opinions on this, good or bad.
