| In early February, My girlfriend of 3 years and I broke up. It was the most painful one I've been through because there was no 1 event that killed it. We both have no hard feelings, still love each other, just somehow grew apart in the last 6 months, and were no longer happy. So we both walked away before we could get even more on each others nerves and hate each other, and left it with a "maybe someday again" kinda feel to it. We broke up at our little neighborhood bar at 1 in the morning, after a night of smoking a few bowls and drinking some off topics. (We needed those to get up enough courage to be so honest about our relationship's demise.) After a few months, it was no longer the only thing I thought of, and I was healing fairly well, all things considered. However, there is one song that brings back all the pain immediately. Its "Girl From a Pawnshop" by the Black Crowes (my favoite band, btw). It is set in a similar setting as to where my breakup occurred, and paints a lyrical picture so vivid that every time I hear it, I can't think of anything else for a while after. Songs like this are the reason I listen to music, songs that spark an immediate emotional reaction every time i hear them. Girl From a Pawnshop is the most powerful to me, and probably will be for a long time. What one song gives you that gut-wrenching reaction, that song you can barely listen to, but could never turn off? I hope I didn't ramble too much, but I was kicking back with a fresh bowl and the internet before bedtime and the song came on, and I just started writing. Didn't expect it to be this long. lyrics |

| I have cried before because of the intensely painful memories certain songs bring back to life. I can't remember any of them though, and I certainly don't listen to them on purpose. I feel bad for you, as breaking up with your gf of 3 years must have been horrible. I've been with my gf for 1.5 years now, and the idea that we might grow apart and break up scares the crap out of me. I really hope that never happens to me, and I hope it doesn't happen to you again. I'm glad to see that you are healing, and I hope you eventually get back together with your gf (assuming you want to). Do you still see her? Are you friends or anything? In my opinion, you two owe it to yourselves to give it another shot. Good luck in the future. |

One last note on Girl From a Pawnshop: The version that I love the most is off the Black Crowes live disc, which was recorded at the Orpheum Theater in Boston at the end of their tour(Oct 30-31, 2001). I was at both shows, and my ex was right next to me at the last show. Little did i know then that it would be the Crowes' last show as well as the last show we ever saw together. Oh well, at least the music will always be there... | ||

| Two songs I used to listen to over and over were Bother, by Stone Sour, and Understanding In a Car Crash, by Thursday. Those songs just described all of my feelings exactly. They don't have the same effect on me anymore, because I have since moved on, but I still like the songs.
