| << Re-Iggyniting the Stooges Tue Jul 1, 4:15 PM ET Iggy Pop and original Stooges Ron and Scott Asheton have recorded their first new music together in 30 years and are planning to hit the road again this summer. Best known for such seminal proto-punk anthems as "Search and Destroy," "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "No Fun" and legendary live shows fronted by the shirtless, self-indulent Pop, Iggy and the Stooges were one of the most influential acts of the 1970s. Back in January, Pop reconvened Ron, who played guitar and bass, and brother Scott, on the toms, for a recording stint at the Hit Factory Criteria Studios in Miami. Those early sessions resulted in the first four tracks on Pop's latest album, Skull Ring--"Little Electric Chair," "Skull Rings," "Loser" and "Dead Rock Star. After getting their feet wet again in the studio, the Godfather of Punk and his bandmates headlined April's Coachella Festival in California, and are scheduled to play a handful of dates this summer, including Jones Beach Amphitheater in New York on August 9, followed by a homecoming in Detroit on August 14. It was in Motor City that Pop and the Ashetons first played on Halloween night in 1967 under the name the Psychedelic Stooges. The group, initially formed as a Doors knockoff, dropped the "Psychedelic" part shortly after bassist Dave Alexander joined the lineup. They released Fun House and The Stooges, but Iggy's nasty heroin habit derailed the group in 1970. In 1972, they were coaxed back together (sans Alexander) by self-professed fan David Bowie. Outside of Pop's stint in a mental hospital in 1973, the band continued to be a noisy force in the development punk, up there with the Sex Pistols, Ramones and the Clash. Iggy and the Stooges played their final gig on February 9, 1974 (memorably ending with a free-for-all between the band and a local biker gang), before calling it quits due to burnout and internal bickering. Iggy relocated to Berlin in the late '70s with Bowie and wrote one of his best known hits, "Lust for Life," which reemerged in 1995's Trainspotting, the indie hit about heroin junkies. In recent years, Pop has toured with his new backing band, the Trolls. Although Iggy and the Stooges have been repeatedly dissed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (the band has made the final ballot for the past several years but never mustered enough votes for induction), Iggy scored a consolation prize last month when he was awarded France's prestigious Officer of the Arts and Letters award from the country's minister of culture. This summer's anticipated reunion will be minus two original members: Alexander died in 1975 from alcoholism, and guitarist James Williamson left the music biz. Skull Ring--which also includes two tracks recorded with Green Day a collaboration with Sum 41 on the record's first single, "Little Know It All" and cameos from the Trolls and hardcore rapper Peaches--is due on on Virgin Records on September 30. >> I'm Less Nessman, ![]() pOOn ![]() |

| He was definately punk WAY before there was "punk". I remember getting Funhouse back about 71 or something. I was still a far-out teenage hippie & that stuff was way too high-pressure for me at the time..... didn't like it at all. It wasn't until the late 70's punk-thing that I rediscovered those Stooges albums. The 3 stooges albums! Never liked much of his later stuff except for a song here & there, but Funhouse & Raw Power are 2 awsome albums done WAY before their time.
