Surely you've heard of Spirit. They had the big 70-71 hit "I Got a Line On You" Most all oldies stations still have that on steady rotation. Not avant-garde at all.
Gong is very trippy....sorta happy-trippy-hippie music. There's some very good stuff on their early albums, & I wouldn't call it avant-garde either....in fact, you'd probably like it. Either the album Camenburt Electrique, or You would be good ones to check out.
I should be more familiar with Red Crayola & Arzechel, but that stuff kinda slipped by me back then & I never got around to checking much out.

I'm an idiot, I must say, yeah, I remember Spirit with Randy Cali-
fornia...in fact, I saw them in concert with (believe it or not) Rick
Derringer and Aerosmith in 1976...Spirit's 'I got a line on you'
rocked! I can't believe that slipped right thru my head, probably
because there's nothing in there to stop it, but I have an album
with 'Mr. Skin' on it...remember that one? Anyway, thanks for
waking me up...I guess I was ripped (as my wife says, "when
aren't you?") when I posted.........................
