| hey i am not sure if there is already a post like this. but anyways, people should post the more obscure/"cult" type bands and music they listen to. velvet underground is one exmple of a less known band (it seems like) that is so great to listen to...it has some really cool/trippy music, especially for the time it was made in. you know what i heard? that the velvet underground's music inspired the music of Charles Manson! :eke: so ....post them!

| Velvet Underground rules. Their first concert was in a school really close to my dad's school, but he didn't go. Their best known album is "Velvet Underground and Nico," which I've heard and I love it. Gots to get me a copy of that.

| They definitely qualify as a band I don't listen to nearly enough anymore. But did any of you guys catch the new Nissan commercial that was on TV two or three months ago? I was shocked when I saw it, and recognized the song in the background. Its about the XTerra, and the beginning of "Heroin" is playing over the whole thing. "It's not the song, it's two chords," Reed says. "You really think it's funny when something's banned for so long and they want two chords for whatever." (from Newsday.com, 6-6-03.) I guess I was a little disappointed at first (after the shock wore off), but it still is one of the best songs they ever crafted. |

I'll never understand why Lou Reed made it big & John Cale didn't. I've always been a huge fan of all the John Cale solo albums Other obscure/cult-type bands? Fer me that would be...... The Residents- with over 60 albums & 3 dvd's so far & still going strong, they're the most prolific & most successful "independent" band ever. Pere Ubu & David Thomas' other side projects like The 2 Pale Boys. Talk about ahead of their time, the early Ubu albums are must-haves. Fred Frith- the best avant-garde guitarist ever. The solo albums are amazing & his various groups are all worth checking into.... Massacre, The Skeleton Crew, Art Bears, Henry Cow Negativland- awsome band, but this wouldn't even be classified as music. I could go on, but these are my top favorites, as far as obscure/cult goes.

| I was going to start a new thread, but I searched and found this one. I just started to get into VU and I absolutely love it! High or not, I am mesmorized by their sound. The first song I downloaded of thiers was "Heroin," which blew my fuggin' mind. After that, I downloaded as many of thier songs as I could find! I'm 18 years old and I HATE the new poppy-rock sound, so I'm just starting to discover the genius of many more classic rock bands. I used to listen to the grunge-rock from the early to mid-90s a lot, and now I see where much of the inspiration for thier music came from. Anyways, my three favorite songs by VU right now are Heroin, Sweet Jane, and Crimson & Clover.

| Here are some relatively unknown late 60's/early 70's prog rock/psych rock bands I love: Arzachel Gong Spirit Red Crayola There was some really crazy, experimental stuff going on back then. Red Crayola is totally insane. I guess ambient is weirder, but I don't really consider it music... |

| No, I'm afraid I've never heard of any of those...are they those avant-garde types of music...never could get into that much...to tell the truth, I've never been a real big fan of Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention or Captain Beefheart. Very rarely do I hear them, usually if I'm at somebody's house.................. ![]() |
