I hope this is the right section for this thread.

I bet everyone has noticed how people tend to stereotype what kind of music people will be in to based upon how they appear, how they talk/act, what class or creed they originate from, or their age. I wondered how many people here will admit to doing it themselves.

I'm black, so of course the type of music I'm most stereotyped as liking is rap/r & b/hip hop. You wouldn't believe the degree to which most people - even, and perhaps, especially black people - are socialised into believing that hip hop etc. is solely for black people; or, at least, that black people are somehow conditioned to like it more than whites. But it isn't true. I can't stand rap/hip hop. I like rock music (classic/indie mostly), and have a pretty broad taste in that. Everything from Metallica (possibly one of my favourite bands) to the White Stripes (another favourite), to Guns N' Roses. But I don't own a single hip hop/rap CD.

I also make stereotypes at times, I'm not afraid to admit. Especially based on someone's clothing. This wont make much sense to non-Brits, but everytime I see someone walking around in track pants/Henri Lloyd/Fred Perry-type tops/burberry caps, I automatically assume that they're into trashy dance music. When I see someone wearing black leather/overly baggy clothing, I'll assume they're into nu-metal/goth rock.

Does anyone else believe that they often get stereotyped into what kind of music they're in to, or hold stereotypes of their own?

I agree.

I think most people point out a stereotype as more of a typical fan of the genre.

Im into alot of music from underground hip-hop like Sole,to Portishead, to Dj Shadow, to rock like Deftones.

Some people may be asking for it, by wearing the artists clothing, or making their choice of music blatent to others.

Also, if people are basing your musicial preference on your appearance, how you talk and act, what class or creed you originate from, or your age, is borderline racist and facist.
I dont think anyone should be judged on their preference of music.

Its like the 'hippy days' when you could tell JUST by the cut of ones clothes if they were into Southern Rock, Psychedelic music etc. It's not too hard to stereotype someone because of their looks, and if you lived in the USA Breed, I'd be a bit more surprised of your musical choices. But since the musical scene and styles in Great Britain are markely different than ours, I'm not surprised.

I'll admit that when I used to think of Rap/Hip-Hop music...I thought of Black people. After all, I haven't known many people of color who are into the Rock genre. But now, it seems that it's a genre that's caught the ear of young white kids. I guess I could liken it to years ago, when it was mostly Blacks who were into Blues and R&B. Then, bands like Led Zep, Cream etc. adopted and tweaked it's 'sound' and made it their own.

And you know what's interesting...do you know who has been credited with being the first "Rap" performer? Debbie Harry of 'Blondie'...a white WOMAN! Just listen to the song 'Rapture', and you'll clearly hear a "Rap" song!

Back then it was SO easy to tell exactly what someone listened to. It seems really silly looking back.
We're all wearing our little uniforms.

I'm a big ol' 50yr old Tx. guy who is usually wearing overalls.
You wouldn't really expect to find me blastin' some major Korn (etc) either.
I never cease to freak out my daughters grll-friends, I guess people who look like me arent supposed to be tokin' lots-o-weed while crankin' lots-o heaviness.
When there's a metal show here, I feel like Grampaw-Dave as I mill around the floor getting random tokes.

I guess I missed that rule........

Thats a good point there Breed. I find I get the same reaction when I tell people my musical interests. After naming bands such as Floyd, Zeppelin, Beatles, Doors, Hendrix etc. they're like "oh yeah...so you like hippie music." It's not that i really object to the term itself, its the fact that they feel that all these bands can fit under the such a broad classification.

yeah i'm a youngin, and most of the music i really enjoy is from the 70s and 80s, so its always good when me and my friends go to concerts because we're the youngest ones there.

case in point, last week i went to see Neil Young (wont get into the constant smell of weed ) easily the youngest people there.

i usually get the hippie tag...then again, i cant really offer much of a defense. smoke weed, play guitar, rant about Bushy all the time, listen to Led Zeppelin and all the good stuff.

eh, ive been called worse, lol
