Not shocking at all to be honest...

We currently pay a tariff on all blank media, around $0.50 per CD if I recall correctly. This in fact entitles us to copy all we want, immune from any civil or criminal penalties. I've always maintained this; there's no way that anyone in Canada will ever face penalties in a lawsuit concerning downloading and copying.

But I'm moving it to music, it'll probably get more hits there since WIC is mainly for security/political issues.

Which is why Canada has such a booming Music industry right? Just like Canada has a booming pharmacutical industry right?

Everyone knows the loss of sales had nothing to do with programs like Napster and Kazaa, it had to do with the decision of dropping "single albums" and only offering full CDs.

If a CD actually had 18-20 GOOD songs on it, instead of 1 "music video" song, 1 "radio" song, and the rest just to fill up space (in other words, make the $18 price tag seem "worthwhile")...then maybe they wouldn't have lost money by eliminating the "single CD" which is basically all Kazaa/Napster allow, for single-song downloads. Granted you can take the time to download an entire album, but why bother if they suck, if people are constantly downloading the "top" selling songs then so be it, they (record companies) never should have gotten rid of those single-song CDs for like $3.

Another option, instead of the plastic cases and fancy ads, just give me the flippin' CD in a protective, thin, cheap case...because it's just going to end up in my CD changer and who needs the bulky plastic case anyways? Advertising is money, and we pay for it...

When you avoid the artists that are on the radio & buy stuff by the REAL artists who are more out on the fringe, you will get whole albums that are great. The best artists & the most interesting music is NOT on the radio.

People like me do need the full jewel case. I've got thousands & thousands of CD's. If I file a cd away in a slim case it will get lost & forgotten about.

lol i was feeling guilty 'cause before i moved, i was in vancouver and i was mass download/burning cd for free, and bootlegs which are illegal, but now i don't have to worry about going to court.
this is great.
i hope that it will stay that way in Canada.

Default Dutch Supreme Court rules Kazaa is legal

December 19th 2003: the Supreme Court of the Netherlands upholds a lower court's ruling that Kazaa can't be held liable for the copyright-infringing actions of users of the file-sharing application.

The Dutch court ruling came too late for Kazaa BV. The Amsterdam software company that introduced Kazaa sold most of its assets to Sharman Networks Ltd. incorporated in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu because it faced hefty fines it could not afford after a District Court ruling against it.
