| I voted for the great John Henry Bonham. No one could work a pedal bass drum like him. If you havn't heard "Moby Dick" before, you have some listening to do. Try and find a live version, he solos for 15 - 20 minutes in a lot of them. Also the drums in 'Kashmir' and 'When the Levee Breaks' have BALLS! Not that other Zeppelin doesn't, I just think these two are among the standouts.

| This is such an important topic to me, being the percussionist/stoner that I am. There are many different styles and fields of percussion which people can choose to go into. You cannot simply say who the best drummer is. Each drummer has his or her own individual style, and what someone thinks of as being good, another doesnt. For instance, the common misconception which non-percussionists make is to say that someone is the best because they play the fastest beats. It is true that playing fast takes some chops, but another factor is the complexity of the rhythm which is being produced, then there is the quality of the composition which the drummer has written, and how it interacts with the other instruments(if there are any). So taking these things into consideration, this would mean that the best drummers would take all of these things and achieve equilibrium between them. Some people whom I believe have achieved great success in percussion include: Rock/Drumset Players: Mike Portnoy, Akira Jimbo, Dennis Chambers, Neil Pert, John Bonham, Ringo Starr, Buddy Rich, Phil Selway, and Dave Grohl Rudimental Percussionists: Jeff Queen, Bill Bachman, Scott Johnson, Tyler Dempsey, Thom Hannum, Collin McNutt, and Mike Macintosh Keyboard Percussion: Gifford Howarth |
