Default come on now!!!!!!!

The Stones were a great band and a great hit machine, but Led Zeppelin changed the way music is made. Their songcrafting was intricate and full of breaks and clever changes. They had a singer with a beautiful voice and emotional range who could stay on key when he wanted to (not dissing Mick, just bein real), one of the great rock guitarists, and the drummer that is the reason drums are mixed way louder in the mix today than they were in the 60s. Zeppelin inspired every rock group that followed them and even hip hop! What is the Stones' equivalent of "Stairway To Heaven" or "Dazed And Confused" or "No Quarter"? No contest. Like Otto said, "Zeppelin ruuuuuuuuules!" The Stones got no case. The Beatles on the other hand...

The Stones have more depth, though, and although this may just be my opinion, I think it is fairly well substantiated by their history. By no means would I ever deny what Zeppelin did or the musical revolution they facilitated...

Yes, there is no comparision with any band to the Beatles. The White ablum alone is better than anything zeppelin or the stones put out.

Default Stones all the way

When I was in my early teens, i listened to noghting but Zep. If you want to compare musicianship, there is a ton in Zep. But, the Stones had it too and they used it for songwriting. Stones songs are much more groundbreaking and they have a really diverse set. They mixed country and rock before the Byrds even in 1966 on "High and Dry" off of "Aftermath". The blues is everywhere. They were the first group to use sitar to make a huge international hit w/ "Paint It, Black". They used jazz ("Time Waits For No One", "Melody") reggae, hell, their original guitarist Brian Jones made a whole album of world music (The Pipes of Pan at Jajouka, The Master Musicians of Jajouka).

If that isn't enough to give the Stones the edge, look at the lyrics. The Stones sang about Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll. Zep sang about The Lord of the ****in' Rings!

Wow, I was finally going to post in this thread, but shakes stole my thunder.

Like most good American rock fans, I love Led Zeppelin. Jimmy Page is my favorite guitar player (save a few solo artists) mainly because of the fact that he could play out of control and sloppy and make it sound like nothing else could have ever fit. I saw Page/Plant a few times, but when I got to see Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes together a few years ago, Page lit up like I never thought the world would see again. You could hear him slur and miss notes, change ideas midstream, and make the ugly sound unreal, beautiful. Joe Perry hopped onstage for the encore, and the 4 guitar jam was as bad-ass as I would have imagined it to be. (HUGE Black Crowes fan, btw.)

The Stones, though, just do it for me every time. They didn't just sing about sex, drugs, and R&R, they WERE all those things. Exile was the first album that sucked me in, with Tumblin Dice, Happy, Rocks Off, the whole thing, really. Not the hardest songs to play, especially when you get the tuning down, but all with great guitar parts. Tons of songs to sing along too, or yell along to, which is almost impossible with Robert Plant a lot of the time. Jones, Ron Wood, Mick Taylor, I still don't know who I like more. They've made classic albums with all of 'em. The Stones just make me really happy, and thats not always an easy thing to do. They get my vote.

Matter of fact, Dead Flowers just came on the radio now. Yet another of my favorite songs...

I don't know crap about which band is more talented, who had a better singer, guitarist, etc. Personally, I always put Zeppelin in my top three bands, they just sound perfect to me. The Beatles always have been and always will be my favorite band. I also love the Stones, they have an amazing sound, too. But I'm such a huge Led Zeppelin fan it's no comparison.

I would have to go with "Moby Dick" as the best song to listen to stoned. Best drum solo I've ever heard.

See if you can find "Moby Dick/Bonzo's Montreux." It was put together from the two songs by Jimmy Page for the first Zeppelin box set. I thing the set was called Remasters. I think you'll like it.
