Unhappy Phish - Undermind

pretty much sums up the album. Phish seems to have taken a break, (for good) from writing complex songs that are complex and long like the good old days. Most of the songs on this album are simple and have guitar solo's that just get annoying song after song. There are some high point's on the album... but you know it's bad when the best song on the album is an accapella. (Grind) Sorry Phish, but Undermind is a pretty weak way to commit suicide.

Out of 5 stars i'll give it 3, and that's higher than it should be just cause i'm a Phish fan

Ever since Phish's hiatus they've been going downhill. Thumbs down, no cigar, and it's about time they broke up. They should have stayed broken up last time, then they really would have ended with a bang. They had some good live stuff, but nothing spectacular. Sorry, I'm a Phish fan too, but I didn't like the direction they were going.

Oh yes, and what is this I'm hearing about Jay-Z performing with them??

I know they did a horrible cover of Girls, Girls Girls, in Vegas, is that related?

Are you joking dude? Jay-Z + Phish, that would be insane!

I think they did the Divided Sky encore @ the Greensboro, NC show in 2003. One of the sound technicians hooked me up with all 3 live sets on CD since I wasn't able to attend

The CD isnt bad. Except for "The Connection". It's too much like Barnaked Ladies in my opinion. Although I like them, I don't like hearing them when I want to hear PHISH!

I heard scents and subtle sounds, army of one, two versions, secret smile all at IT last year and I love them so much. Undermind is an alright track, it's got a lil Dead sound to it so I'm interested in seeing if they do anything funky w/ it live. I REALLY want to hear A song i Heard the Ocean sing live. Its good studio. Access me is a little wierd but its got that wierdness of Phish like Contact.

here is a review that I wrote on Amazon

Undermind. The period at the end of a sentence.

Ladies and Gentlemen: Phish present’s to you their final farewell from music, Undermind. This review is written to get you to detach yourself from the comparisons to the Grateful Dead, and the Beatles (Let It Be), and just take Undermind for what it is and what Phish is trying to make it. However, as you will read, it is impossible not to make comparisons, which is why this album fails.

Phish’s Undermind tries to incorporate all kinds of listeners on this album by making just about every kind of song you can think of, and at the same time, on purpose or coincidentally, making people draw comparisons to other bands. You have on this album, “The Connection” the pop tune that all kids will go in to buy the album for. You have a rocking rock song with a rocking riff: “A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing” There’s a rock ballad, “Army of One”, a misunderstood off tempo trippy song “Access Me”…..
And all of these songs, although unique, cannot stop the comparisons that they will get, Counting Crows, The Who, The Allman Brothers, Pink Floyd. However these comparisons are unavoidable. I guess Phish does not have a problem with this being the sound that they are going for. Which is a blended out version of songs that all of us, including Phish, grew up with.

They have created a sort of in-between space of music that is neither quite here nor there. It is there own blend of everything; which in some recipes can work out well. This album however takes each music style and band and makes it into its own individual song. This technique works in some ways and doesn’t in other ways. It creates more of a mix cd, where some songs are good and some songs are not good. The album tries to be a complete album by placing the songs in the perfect locations; the hit single and rock songs at the beginning, the rock ballad near the middle, the trippy song towards the end, and the overly-dramatic plea (Secret Smile) at the end. However this technique will not fool true music fan’s to seeing that this cd is incomplete. The easy comparisons to other bands just make this fact more obvious, because it seems like we’ve heard the songs before.

In Undermind, All the members of the band, but especially Trey, are calling out to the fans, pleading for them to accept Phish as who they are, grown men who are tired and want to give it up. However what they don’t understand is that most Phish fan’s understand and would rather see them die off with a hurrah than a plea.

Star ratings are always hard to give for reviews, however for this cd I believe that they are perfect. Phish’s Undermind deserves 3 stars out of 5, and if you are really searching give it 3.5 .
