| Ok, I know I'm not the only one on here who's noticed the lack of variety in rock nowadays. It all sounds the same. The Hives/Vines/Strokes, Simple Plan/New Found Glory/Etc. They all cry about their girls they can't get and it's annoying as hell. I am a rock purist. I want a song that I can party to and not have to here some whiny 25 year old guy crying cuz his girl left. THAT'S WHY YOU PICKED UP A GUITAR MAN, TO GET CHICKS!!!! I mean classic rock is where it's at for me. But is there any bands out there that haven't hit the main stream yet and have good music? I mean tlaking about drugs, sex and all the good stuff. I don't wanna hear someone whining on 12 tracks of a $18 CD then complain about downloading free music. Also where are the solos? I've heard like 2 good solos in the apst 2 years. "Like A Stone" by Audioslave has a good 15 second one and "Slither" by Velvet Revolver is also a good one. Does anyone else feel the same way aas me on this? I mean come on. Sorry for the rant.

| It almost seems like "rock" music is becoming less of a rebel thing and so more "mature" people can be seen in public making it. It's happened before. Classical composers, in their time, have incited riots and protests with their music. Elvis, who seems like a kitten now, was (i think) banned from the radio at one point. Now, those guys are purely in the domain of stuffy old farts in suits sipping their champagne. It makes me sad to say this, but gangsta rap and hip-hop and R&B are where the "rebel" attitude is at. The establishment is also coming down pretty hard on techno/electronic music, but that can't really be about anything because of the whole NO LYRICS thing... That said, there will always be die-hards. They'll just find it hard to get contracts with major labels. One thing you CAN try is your area's local bands. Listen to a rock and roll station late at night on the weekends and you might hear some cool stuff.

| I must say that I agree with you, GrassyAss. Even though Elvis seems like Barney to us these days, the kind of stuff that the late 60s and the 70s had is still pretty hardcore. Sublime was decent for new stuff, but it doesn't compare to the oldies like Zep and Hendrix and Cream and the Doors and the other classics. Maybe all the original stuff was done and is now over, that's why there doesn't seem to be anything good on the radio these days. Almost all of the guitar effects which became part of the style of the classic rock bands (distortion boosters, wawa pedals (Cream did that the best)) are now used ad nauseum in so many new songs. I despise the fact that I will never be able to go to a concert of any of my favorite bands. Yeah, the Who are still performing as are a few others, but the majority are dead and gone. The only modern thing I even listen to these days is some late night Jazz on a college station we get 'round here. It's very chill. Other than that, it's all classic rock. If you're looking for something good, here are a few bands that other classic rock fans like: Radiohead, Tool, Metallica...not much else. |

| Have you heard The Darkness yet? Some great, catchy, ballsy, put-it-on-11 rock. Fun as it gets right now. Rancid, though maybe a punk band, puts out some of the best guitar-based music around (Indestructable). I think Jet will be around for a while, and definitely recommend their album.Best cure for your musical ills is to just go out and see local, live music. You'll get to see a lot of good (and bad) bands, and it can really show you how fun music should be. Or start your own band, and show everyone what you think music should sound like. Of course, don't be afraid to bring out Appetite for Destruction if you feel you need to... |

| i feel ya man (not that way) music today is completely horrible. its all power chords and ****ty singers, i mean listen to new found glory; that guys voice is as annoying as a car alarm! there is no artistry in music anymore, musicians used to have something to get across to their audience; now they want an audience so they'll buy cds, tickets, and t-shirts. finding a good band is like finding a needle in a hay stack now. i could really go on for hours with this, but that would make for a repetitive post ![]() i would go all out and name my favorite classic rock bands but i think you've been turned on to them already. although you apparently don't like "whining" bands, i must say tool is a great band. there not really whining about how life sucks, but there is a lot of dark undertone to their music; their music is passionately poetic, as i like to call it. they don't try to appeal to the majority, which is very rare today. The same goes for a perfect circle, they're a breath of fresh air in today's music. Another band that i "sort of" like is the white stripes; its sort of odd for me to like them, but I just do. There isn't a powerful meaning behind them but there is a simplistic beauty to their music; and they turned me on to blues. some blues music is good, some is bad and repetitive. most is based on a blues music theory so a lot of it has the same sound and feel to it; but there is completely original blues out there, you just gotta find it. some jazz is good too, you just gotta love the jazz guitarist! ![]() one last ditch hope for you: MAKE YOUR OWN MUSIC! there is nothing in this world like playing an instrument, absolutely nothing. playing music is like a powerful and addicting drug. (in a really good way ) I can have the absolute ****tiest day and come home to my guitar and feel great. It takes me away from all conscious thought; its like meditating. although its very difficult to learn to play any instrument, its just too good to give up on; I bought and returned three guitars till I finally learned how to play. but it was completely worth it.if I start talking about music and i can't stop, sorry for the length ![]()

| you guys are my GODS!!! i have been complaining about rock for WHO KNOWS HOW LONG!!! IT SUX MY ASSHOLE. seriously im like... crying everyday when i turn on my radio. i miss the 90's, 311, toadies, weezer, sublime, nirvana, greenday, etc. etc. AS for the today world... i would say i ****ing love TOOL, one of my fav bands. the whole lateralus record is incredible. of course, i drum like a nut, and danney carry (sp?) is a small god to me. travis barker is a bad ass drummer, but im sorry blink, you suck, boxcar racer is like 1 notch ahead, and they pretty much suck too. a perfect circle is tight as hell, 311's new stuff from Evolver, i like.. i dunno about anyone else. hrm.. i dunno if you guys know the toadies, they were big in D-town (Dallas, Tx) cuz they were local here, but they rock out like mofo's, definately a reccomendation. oooo Achilles Last Stand from Led. a song i didn't know existed until a couple of weeks ago, i happened upon it on kazaa (not like i use kazaa, heh... uh..) but its over 10 minutes long, tight as hell. Dream Theater is tight, Queens of the Stone Age. I love DMB, but thats not really rock. If anyone is a stoner drummer like i am, please contact me, we need to talk, i have **** u gotta see. PEACE! ![]() O ya.. System of a down is awesome too.... i just read the post above me so sorry if i am repeating anything. Iluvatar (sp..) i totally agree with you, i have been playing piano 12 yrs, drum 4, and i dabble in guitar. and i could be wanted to kill myself, and all i have to do is play roulette from system on the guit-fiddle, and ****s cool man... **** is just cool. i too could go on for hours, but that could be another thread, that reads "music today sux" |

| you're right dude, the early 90's actually did have some good stuff, but green day only had an album or two that i liked a lot. tool ****in rules, queens of the stone age are awesome, or whatever those guys end up doing next, radiohead is still in their prime too. i'm kind of tired of the white stripes stuff, but they could put out an awesome album again maybe. i think the absolute worst time for music was the last half of the 90's, music seems to be improving! i think people are beginning to appreciate bands like led zeppelin, early metallica, acdc and sabbath again, and playing music that is inspired by them. and austinj86, i love achilles last stand too, i didn't really know about it until recently either, but you should check out more stuff from their last couple albums, there was some interesting stuff in there that a lot of people don't know about ![]() |

| About the play my own music, I do play guitar but I'm still learning. The friends I have that were gonna start a band are more influence by Blink 182 and I'm not down with that. Sometime I'll find some kids to rock with. But I still got 3 years left of high school so I'm all set. |
