| Dude, you completely missed the point of what i was saying! I was commenting on how the rock industry needs to inject life into its withered self, and just on the horizon is the fusion of electronic beats (the shiz) with the tenacity of rock. Maybe i was a bit bold in stating the killers, but i didnt say they were "the saviours of the music world" as you think i said, they were just the first new band i could think of who are using this technology to their advantage. Believe it or not, the influences of the 80's are coming back, the "dare to be different" attitudes, the outrageous fashion, and the PIMP ASS music. Dont try to deny it or diss it either, because in 2005 or 2006 it will be prevalent. PS Franz have been compared to alot of awesome music from the 80's, Joy Division etc

| It started out as just being indie in the US, but now that single is so popular it's almost overplayed. But they're just so fun and catchy you don't mind. |

| Franz Ferdinand is right in the thick of [one of] the newest rock movements, namely that of 80s influenced, electro-danceable rock. I say one of because there are two or three current trends in rock that all seem to be converging on the mainstream: this electronic/dance rock (ie The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, The Faint), indie rock (ie Bright Eyes, Modest Mouse, Rilo Kiley), and emo (Taking Back Sunday, My Chemical Romance, Matchbook Romance). Now of course all three of these categories could easily fit under the 'indie' banner as they were all relatively unknown up until recently, but it seems more appropriate to separate them based on their more distinct variations. This, in my opinion, is such a breath of fresh air for rock; so many different styles being brought to the masses. And it’s good to see so many bands getting credit and airplay for being different and unique. Some might argue against many of these bands as being unique but it’s likely they haven’t really taken the time to explore each band fully, and as such need to do so before commenting on any of them. Each has they’re own personality, even between the sometimes generic sounding bands of emo. Franz Ferdinand’s album is so catchy I don’t see how it couldn’t become popular, and The Killers show a level of maturity in their debut album that makes me anxious to see what they come up with for their sophomore effort. As for Modest Mouse, obviously they’re an acquired taste – their old stuff more so than ‘Good News..” – but if you can overcome their initial abrasiveness it’s pure [drugged] genius. You’re on a marijuana discussion board man, appreciate the more out there stuff! The new album might not be their best, but its certainly an accomplishment to move to the mainstream and still retain the feel and genius that made them so great. Its certainly not a bad album by any means, and probably their most consistent effort thanks to the heightened production quality. Oh, and to bongwater’s mention of a band from Australia, the only band from down under that I can think of are The Vines. They’re part of the garage rock movement (The White Stripes, The Hives, The Vines), which seems to have died down a bit since indie found such a strong foothold. I guess The Hives are really the only band of that movement getting much mention lately. Anyone who complains about the quality of music becoming popular now should really ask themselves, would they rather go back to the days when Britney Spears and Limp Bizkit ruled the airwaves? I certainly hope not. |
