Thumbs up Blues Guitar

I play guitar and am a huge fan of the blues. SRV is my favorite artist of all time but i also love bb king, albert king, jimi hendrix, eric clapton, and kenny wayne shephard. I have several DVD's of SRV and one of Hendrix. Watching these DVD's high is like watching an artist create his masterpiece.

I was wondering if anyone else out there likes the blues and what are your favorite bluesmen?

Also, if you don't listen to blues music, you should try it sometime. I didn't think i would like it at all, but now i can't get enough of it!

Ya gotta love the blues. I love all the guys you mentioned, however I have never really listened to much Kenny Wayne Shephard. My favourite would have to be Clapton, followed closely by Stevie Ray. But I like a lot of the old original bluesmen who people like Clapton and SRV got their licks from. Oldies like Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, the three Kings (Albert, Freddie, and B.B.) and Skip James. Also, Zeppelin deserves mention when talking about blues, even those most of their great blues songs are covers. But hey, so are Clapton's.

The other day on TV I lucked into a showing of the Roadhouse Blues festival, and it had to be the most star-studded lineup I had ever seen.

As a guitarist, I love the blues because its a genre that pretty much anyway knows. If you are trying to jam and no one knows any of the same songs, everyone can usually manage a twelve-bar blues jam in E or something simple like that.

i'm getting to be a fan of the blues, as you can see from my avatar/sig, leadbelly is one of my favorites, along with skip, lightnin hopkins, mississippi john hurt, and robert johnson. i'm not a big fan of the more electrical blues, i prefer some nice, mellow, acoustic blues to relax to. also the stories behind the songs are always very interesting. i recommend picking up the album "avalon blues" by mississippi john hurt and "take this hammer" by leadbelly. leadbelly's last sessions are also amazing, my favorite song being an elongated "ol' Hannah" which was originally a prison song which leadbelly picked up on one of his terms for assault. "devil got my woman" is a quality skip james album, with "good roadcamp blues" and "22-20 blues". i would also recommend picking up skip's rare and unreleased recordings, some really cool gospel stuff on there.

John Martyn did a cover of Skip's 'Devil Got My Woman' on his album Solid Air, but he called the song I'd Rather Be the Devil and just gave credit for the lyrics. It sounds nothing like the original but it is still an interesting take on the song.

i'll have to check that out, devil got my woman is probably one of my favorite blues songs. it's a very eerie song, i dunno man it just sends chills down my spine when i hear it. i'm not a big fan of covers but it might be worth listening to, there was a show not too long ago on about all the great blues artists and they had covers kind of intertwined in the stories of the artists. pretty cool program, thanks for the recommendation!

Unhappy

Man, this post really took off didn't it.

Too bad. I was hoping to get more people interested in the blues. I've been listening to a ton of B.B. lately and have really gotten into his style. Here are some songs I think everyone should check out:

The Thrill Is Gone
Chains and Things
You Better Not Look Down
To Know You Is To Love You
There's Got To Be A Better World Out There
When Love Comes To Town (with U2, i know it sounds weird, but it's a great song)

Don't be discouraged, Shotgun. You have to realize that most of the people on these boards are young kids who listen to the crap that muchmusic tells them to listen to, and are completely ignorant to most music they havn't heard of. Just browse the names of the threads in the music forum and I think you'll know what I mean. I've started several threads about legendary artists that got 0 replies.

Default Blues

Been a fan of blues for as long as I've been a fiend for green baby.

Check out Robert Johnson man; he's the Socrates of blues guitar. Jimi being Plato and I am Aristotle.
