Right on!

I bought "The Very Best of the Gratefull Dead - Remastered" and gave it a whirl...impressions:

I had NO IDEA it was so "old" sounding!! Hahah! I'm sorry, im freakin 23...I SHOULD know this stuff

It definatley sounds to me like early, EARLY jam-ish music. I can see where phish, oysterhead, sci, widespread, ect get their inspiration...

But the newer stuff has taken that feel and idea so much further because of ability and technology (soundstagewise)...wouldn't you agree?

Oh man im seriously going to try and meet the band somehow. Just to shake hands and walk off if possible...I know it'll happen somehow...if I belive enough

Has anyone seen the DVD that went along with "One Step Closer"? It details the making of the CD in a house in the mountains. . .

It's really well-done and nice to watch...however,

You can totally see why the CD sounds the way it does...THE PRODUCER! They got a new producer this past CD...and he just dosen't really seem to fit the dynamic of the band very well from appearances to attitudes...

All the band members when interviewed (except billy) seemed to be sort of "bland" feeling about the new producer.

In many shots, you can see how the producer's sugestion ended up being the winning cut on the CD. The song "Rainbow Serpent" is an example of how he molded an idea to his own. . . It's rather distressing to see SCI pull in a "slick producer from hollywood" and see what the result was. . .

Less jams, more focus on short 3-5 min songs complete w/lyrics that are very easily acsessed. . .

Dunno, my impressions after watching the companion DVD. . .

besides improv jazz the dead are not early "jam" music, they are the original creators of the entire jam genre. is the cd you got live or studio? if its not live then i dont think it really shows them all that well. i never really liked their studio stuff much and it isnt a good representation of them i dont think really. live stuff is where its at. and if you ever get the chance i higly highly recommend getting the DVD The Grateful Dead Movie. it is from 1974 when the dead were at their prime, and besides tons of sick concert footage it shows alot of back stageness, the crowd, and just everything surrounding the whole scene. really incredible. especially if you take an off topic (ellis dee preferrably but some fun guys would def help too) it will help you be connected with it much better.

na, i gotta say i wouldnt agree at all. i dont know, i dont listen to much modern jam music religiously besides phish so to me its much more about the songs and music, probably also largely because i probably listen to the grateful dead 90% of the time that i listen to music. i by far think the dead have the best and most meaningful songs, and they created the whole idea of what all of this turned into. since they started the dead (and bear owsley in particular) have been inovators in acoustics, and always trying to make advances in sound, and he made a lot. one very particular thing is the wall of sound but besides that i know he did lots of things i cant remember. the amount of off topics available during their whole career available and the group mind/consciousness that they created and shared with every fan at every show and everyone they met will never be able to be matched. im only 21 but to me all their songs seem so timeless, and they still make my heart jump when i see them live (seein phil lesh 3 times next week and bob weir/SCI once in the next 2 weeks ). they grateful dead have had such an impact that will never be matched again. i love them so much.

and i cant really relate much to the dvd/new cd, iv actually never listened to a SCI studio cd, and im not obsessed enough with them to enjoy a dvd like that (although if it was about any dead memebers or phish i would watch it with a fine tooth comb). the only thing i listen to by them are mostly recordings i have of shows i have been to or other live shows i really like. that does sound gay about the producers, but all i really care about is how they rip it up live (and do they ever). all in all i love seeing sci but not really enough to listen to them all the time. that is the dead's job for me. to put it in persepctive on my mp3 player i have all full shows, and there like 5 phish shows (prob 2 i went to), 1 sci and 1 moe. show each (i went to both) and then mabey 15-20 full Grateful Dead shows. for me, in my progression, i became pretty obsessed with phish for a year or two before i actually listened to the dead really intensely. then when i listened to them intensely i found so much more than i have ever seen in phish or any other jam band. sci is cool and all and its def fun to see their shows, but the dead have incredible amounts of substance and so much more. its hard to explain but i dont think there will ever be a part in my life when the grateful dead are not hands down my favorite band ever.

hell ya tho, and have fun at your shows!!!
