Come on. 9/10 of people who listen to this thug/gangster music aren't even living that life. And 9/10 of the people who like that music are only listening to it because their friends like it or MTV tells them to.

Boy, you come off as such an intelligent person JakeLandis!

It's probably better to refrain from making comments when you have no idea what you are talking about.

when it gets to the stage you've defined it becomes pop. 9/10 of the people who in fact listen to that music (leaving aside the genuine market-material) can give as valid a reason for listening to it as grungmonkeys can

Pop and hip hop are different. Rap and hip hop are different.

There is some good rap music out there. I'm just saying that it has no melody, only bad, copied rthyms and beats. I'm also saying that it glamorized a thug gangster lifestyle, and 9/10 of the people who listen to the music don't live that lifestyle. Do you disagree with that?

definetly. rap is my favorite to listen to. a lot of it doesn't tell you to live a certain way.. they're raping about their lives/what they've been through. rap (good rap) is like a passage to their soul and mind. some of it is just phucking around.. but the stuff mtv and 99.9% of radios play are lame. they rap about women, cars, money and drugs.. thats it, over and over again. with no real story behind it. that stuff sucks in my opinion.

canibus is bad because most of the time he raps about how great he thinks he is.. but i still listen to him because he's an excellent lyricist and flows so well. his beats are a little off.. but are so differant than a lot of other stuff that it kind of works. his stuff isn't well produced in my opinion.. but just because he's so good with words is why i listen to him now and then even though he's full of himself, it gets old.

now, i've gotten off track. music doesn't have to represent who you are.. if it does, its your choice. i see all these goth kids, metal heads, emo people and rap heads.. they like to dress so that their music represents them. i think most of these people just havn't found themselves and use music to express themselves, instead of just being them. i know i'm generalizing.. not all are like this. when they get older they still may listen to their type of music.. but they don't dress like fools. some of them conform, others just realize they're comfortable with being them.. and they don't have to wear huge black jeans with a million pockets that make them look like clowns.

stay away from commercial stuff if you want to find some good music.. not all, but a lot of commercial is just written to sell and bring in the $$$$$$$$. the newest thing i've found is playing with peoples emotions to get them to buy albums (emo). very few of it is ok, but it's all the same depressing shiit to me.

this is all my opinion. don't get offended please. i don't think everyones the same.

Hauptmann is exactly right. How do you come to the conclusion that people who live certain lifestyles always listen to the same kind of music? I am a stay at home Mom who jams out Metallica quite often. = )

It is clear the only rap music you have ever been exposed to is on MTV. Anyone who glamorizes living a thug life is a fool. Thinking you need to be living in the ghetto to listen to music that talks about life in the ghetto is ignorance. Besides, that isn't the rap im interested in, I did say in my original post that there is a lot of garbage rap out there.

Let's clearly differentiate the difference between Rap and Hip Hop. Rap is a form of music - emcees rap. Rap is a verb, it is something that you can do. Hip hop is not a verb, you cannot hip hop. Hip hop is a culture that is associated with 4 elements. These are Bboying, grafitti, RAPPING, and deejaying.

Expand your horizons and maybe you will change your opinion.

ignoring the fact that that comment's complete bull****, the rap/emcee/PERFORMANCE i listen to consiste of dj's spinning tunes at 120-140bpm and the emcees blagging over it...they come second in the priority of the art.

i'm willing to bet all rap started that way: dj''s plugging together any subs and decks they've got and a few kids coming along with mics, plugging in and emceeing to it.

the select portion of material that, in the complete essence of the word, GLAMORIZES ghetto lifestyle is pop, imo. take a step back and ask yourself what happens when an intelligent kid is born into a a world of pain.
