walmart is probably the last place you should check out for guitars. pawn shops can have great things, i'd suggest going down to one and a music shop, ask around, write down some models that you'd think he'd like, do some research by going to google.com for some reviews etc..

he might just get bored with it like some kids do, so don't get discouraged in the future if he stops using it/gives up after a few months. this is his first guitar.. there's a ton to choose from, maybe he can give you a better idea of what he'd like? go from there using the info above.

i hoped i helped you even a little.

good luck.

You can find some pretty good ones at the pawnshop, so i would suggest at least checking it out. The only advice i could give would be to look for one that isn't broken. I know you probably don't know what a broken one looks like, but make sure it doesn't have scratches, dings or anything like that. Sit down and play it a little; I'm sure you don't know how to play, but pluck the strings and fret them in different places on the finger board and make sure they ring clearly. If you hear a rattle, it still can be fine; you just might have to send it to the shop to get a little ‘tune-up‘.

But probably the easiest way would be to go with a new one; you know what you're getting then. The cheap one's at Wal-Mart can be a good starting guitar, but there are better cheap starting guitars at a place like Guitar Center. I believe that a place like that (there are tons of them) would have a squire stratocaster WITH amp, cords, and picks for about $120. There are also cheap guitars made by epiphone (i think that's how it's spelled...) that I've heard are pretty good. A little more pricey than the squire's, but they're great for a starter guitar.

Of course, the BEST choice would be to buy a fender strat or a Gibson Les Paul for $300-600; but I'm sure you don't want to spend close to half a grand on something that might just end up collecting dust in the closet . But you are paying for quality. If your son shows promise (as in, he's still enjoying the hell out of it a year or two from now) I would definitely suggest upgrading.

Get a nice but cheep one from a pawn shop, then (if he likes it and continues playing) get him a new nicer one. He doesn't need a really nice one to learn to play does he? Shoot, I learned on a acustical (did I spell that right?) guitar before I got an electrical. Or whatever. Just my 2 cents.

I agree. Ive gotten Saxaphones and clarinets from pawn shops. I would start him out with a cheap one, and if in a year he still plays, upgrade to a nice one.
