They were a global icon rather unlike Jesus.

They had more fans and were probably worshipped more devotely by there most hardcore fans.

I think at the time Lennon was absolutely right. Say what you will, but I think at that time the Beatles were probably way bigger than Jesus.

I might have to disagree if someone said they're bigger than Jesus now, but at the time it was true.

i gotta say hell no- ya Jesus wasn't famous when he was alive but many many times more people know about and love jesus than the Beatles. ya the beatles were huge in our english speaking countries but the reach of Jesus is worldwide, and incredily longer, more ingrained, and more important to people. i will also guarantee that there were more people in the US that were christians than huge Beatles fans at that time. ya alot of young people loved the beatles, but how many people in every walk of life everywhere are christian? beleive me i am very anti christian but the fact is Jesus is beleived to be the Messiah, the son of God, the savior of humanity by about a third of the world (i think i remember that fraction correctly, but i may be wrong). mabey to them when they said that they felt like they were bigger than jesus because of how they were treated, but way more people loved and cared about Jesus than them.

No. And if anyone here actually knows much about the Beatles, they know that this quote was completely misinterpreted and blown out of proportion. When John said this, he said it as kind of a joke in the sense that he found it disgusting how people at the time worshipped the Beatles more than Jesus. He was not on some ego trip, he was just disgusted by the values of society at the time.

He repeatedly apologized for the comment, even though it was taken out of context and he lost thousands upon thousands of fans for it. It caused an anti-Beatles movement and people were smashing and burning records, and many radio stations stopped playing their music and organized burnings. Maybe for a brief period in the 60s, youth were more interested in the Beatles than in Jesus but thats just popular culture. It such bullshit, I mean today Im sure you could find thousands of people who ar emore dedicated to Britney Spears than to Jesus. Is she bigger than Jesus...of course not but there are dumb kids who may think so. Now I know she has not said she is bigger than Jesus, but John did not mean it at all.

Right you are. You've made me re-evaluate the context of my answer. When I said "Yes, they were." I was thinking in terms of dedication to the Beatles rather than Jesus. I was thinking in terms of "Who is more popular and talked about in everyday life? Jesus or the Beatles?"

But nice comparison with the Britney Spears thing.

And yes, that Lennon quote was hugely taken out of context.
