Progressive and power metal is most of what I listen to in the greater metal category.

The Mars Volta are great... saw them in concert in Seattle, very cool

But I don't think they fit into this kind of music, lol. They are much more experimental pyschadelic music, than power metal.

I've seen them categorized as prog metal a few times.

If you go to www.allmusic.com and look up The Mars Volta all the "similar artists" are power metal.

Lately, i've been listening to a lot of Dragonforce, Rhapsody (even though they haven't been classified as power metal, but more "Hollywood Metal", they're pretty close though), and Iron Maiden. \m/

IMO, I don't think its really a sub-genre if only one or two bands play it. Thats like when DragonForce says that they are extreme metal. Its all Power metal just DF plays faster, and Rhapsody has an orchestra

Fair point. I think people referred to Rhapsody as Hollywood Metal though cos they were so outrageous and over the top. Like something in a Hollywood movie.

Yeah. I know what you mean about the whole Dragonforce being extreme metal (or not). I know they're fast-ish and all. But i'd hardly consider them extreme.
