I went over this one with my friend, and the first thing she asked is where are they? In jail?
I always thought of the joker and the thief as regular people in life, but in a way, the watchtower is almost a jail. However, maybe dylan saw life itself as a jail?
People have long been taking life for granted, and maybe even abusing the things they have, and took from other people.
This is really a great line, because when you first hear the song, you kind of associate the joker and the thief as friends. However, its kind of a play on words, as the theif says to the joker himself. So is the joker a joker because he can take all of life in to the point of true happiness? Is life all one big joke? Or is he abvle to joke because he lives life completely positivly?

The joker and the theif really seem to have the same views, which brings me back to the point above.
All throughout life, people and objects come and go. I feel that servants and women are just putting thing relative to a watchtower setting. My friend also brought up a good point, that its putting men (princes) on a higher level, while grouping the women with the servants. Interesting point about society. (assuming of course that the watchtower is only a metaphor for society and life in general)
All these things seem like bad omens to me, maybe dylan is trying to touch on the fact that things dont look to good in the future?




Anyway, this is deffinitly a hard song to go through. When I get some more time and energy up tomorrow, I'll posta few more simpilar ones. But please, feel free to contribute.

Going to do one more tonight-
A person has love for another person, but they dont feel any emotion back. They are numb, feeling nothing.

While my guitar gently weeps is him expressing his emotion through music. Calling out to her, trying to reach her.
Looking at what shes gone though, theres deffinitly problem. Maybe she went through a bad relationship, and now is hiding all her emotions, afraid of being hurt again. By sweeping the floor, maybe hes trying to clear the way for all the love thats sleeping.

Just touching on the fact that no one treated her right, they only used her and abused her, which is what made her hide all emotions. Killed her self esteem, made her think all relationships end negatively. Maybe his guitar "gently" weeping, is trying to coax her out of hiding?

This is where I start to go off on a limb, but bear with me

I think he is so obsessed over this girl, but she isnt giving him any love back, so he takes a step back and kind of looks around to see that the world is still spinning without this girls love. However, he's still head over heals for her.

He is still obsessed over her, and thinks she should try to learn from the negative things shes gone through, and try to free herself.

Follows right along with the lyrics above it, She needs to learn from al the negative experience, and she should still try to live life. Maybe he doesnt see how much negativity could have happened to her? Not sure, this ones tough.....
After all his coaxing and trying for her to learn that life goes on, and the world is still spinning, all her love is still sleeping. However, ending with the chorus shows hes still trying to convince her theres still positivity in the world.....

I feel like analyzing some lyrics. I'm going to do these on the spot since I don't even know what he says in this song. I've been meaning to look up the lyrics for a while

Just to warn everyone I don't consider my interpretation to be "right." It's just an interpretation and it's what makes sense to me within the context of the story.

The Mars Volta - Eriatarka

This is the point in the story where Cerpin Taxt is laying in his hospital bed unconscious and those who know about him trying to kill himself speak of him and talk about what's wrong with him.

The people who speak of Cerpin are trained through conditioning to react to a suicide attempt in a way similar to Pavlov's dog. They gossip behind his back while he lies unknowing and they feel guilt for speaking the way they do.


This one is a little tougher but I believe there was a girl in Cerpin's past who told him that he was some kind of outcast, similar to the scarlet letter, that helped him feel that death is the answer

Cerpin is the trackmarked amoeba. He had a morphine addiction that would have lead to trackmarks and in this uncertain afterlife he feels as unimportant as an amoeba in an alien land. I'm not sure but I think the rest of the lyrics from that quote are aimed directly at morphine. He scratched himself like crazy from the smack. The "tapeworm" is the morphine that Cerpin adores as though it is a pet even though it sucks the life from him. The tentacles are the addiction that he can't shake. The cocooned meat is probably his blood vessels with cicatrize cocoons that you flick or flinch in order to get a vein exposed. Infra-recon forgets makes me believe that he knows what he is doing is "bad" but it's all worth it when the drug is in him.

More of the same from before...

The "fur" is a metaphor for the innocence of childhood. Cerpin evaporated his innocence "because it covers them." In other words he did it without a purpose. He did it without a worthy cause, kind of just for shits and giggles. Just because it covers them I'm going to remove it. The plans they speak of are the plans every parent makes for their child while they still have their "fur."

He is talking about Cerpin's veins. They used to have pulses in them but the impulse to shoot up from the addiction to morphine has scarred his veins and made them "strong."
