| When I was in high school, me and some other band folks would occasionally call it "yahzz band", as if the letter 'j' were in the Spanish language. I don't know why, but this thread just reminded me of that. As for jazz being funny, I'm a bit confused. I'm not sure that I'd call Miles Davis funny, and to me the words "jazz" and "Miles Davis" are synonymous. |

| I guess if you're stoned enough, anything is "funny".

| The only jazz I really listen to (or have listened to) is Thelonious Monk. I apologize if I slaughtered his name, does anyone perhaps have any jazz to suggest I might like? |

| Try John Coltrane's A Love Supreme and Giant Steps. Coltrane played with Monk for a short time, and you may have heard Monk's Live at Carnegie Hall with John Coltrane. Also, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue is said to be the quintessential jazz album. People who hate jazz love Kind of Blue. Another really good one of his to start with would be Milestones. John Coltrane plays on both of these albums. Charles Mingus is also one of the jazz powerhouses that is relatively well known. You might want to check out Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus or The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. Mingus was a badass extrordinaire. Good luck! It's a little daunting trying to find a good place to start in any jazz musician's catalog. Most of the really well known players have upwards of 30 or 40 albums to their name, let alone albums where they were just sidemen. Try some of these out; if you like what you hear, check out any albums made by the other players on these. Again, if you like what you hear, repeat the same process. You'd be surprised how many new discoveries you'll find.

| If you want to learn about jazz, one of the best ways is to listen to your local jazz station or one of the many jazz stations on the internet. Most of them have shows where the DJ plays tunes that relate to each other through the history of jazz and talks about how different musicians have worked together through the years. You'll hear a lot of different kinds and periods of jazz, as well as examples of the music of most of the greats. Live jazz clubs are some of the coolest places on Earth. |

| I wish we had a jazz station or a jazz club here in Juneau. We have a small segment on one of our radio stations (Jazz & Classical) I might have to tune in sometime if I remember.I downloaded a couple Buddy Rich albums and I really like him, thanks a lot Vern. Jazz is so great to wake up to in the morning, really excites ya for the day. |
