WOAH WOAH WOAH! Stop right there buddy! Tool IS a metal band. Psychadelic-post-rock-modern-hip-hop-yada-yada-yada is a genre? Holy crap!

I'm a music teacher, and the one thing that burns me is when people start going on, and on, and on about what genre this band is. If only 4 bands fit into a "genre"? IT AINT A GENRE! That's just retarded!

That's my opinion of the IDEA of all those genre's, I don't wanna knock you as a person because a lot of people do put bands into those FAR FAR too detailed genres... it's just that can't a band just be metal for the sake that it's heavy? So it's not as heavy as some other band... that doesn't take away from the fact that it IS still metal. I know it may be hard to see it this way... but I used to be a metal-elitist and I just learned to accept that some bands, whether you like them or not, ARE metal.
That's my opinion on that! Now onto my favorite metal bands...

My style in music is very limited, I'll admit, but I'm eternally accepting of all types of music

Pantera, Slayer, Dream Theater, Opeth, Tool, Symphony X, Slipknot, Rammstein, Ozzy, Metallica, Megadeath, Lamb of God, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Gwar, Disturbed (Guilty pleasure), Coheed, Children of Bodom, Anthrax, Black Sabbath, Dio. There's probably more that I didn't name

Very big metal fan, my absolute favorite is dream theater... they've had a HUGE influence on me musically. I'm sure it's that way for any musician that first hears Dream Theater.

Nope.

Tool isn't metal. People just want to classify them as metal to make them appear to be something they aren't. They are a progressive/alternative-rock band.

What makes them a metal band? I've never understood why people classify them as one. Their 'heaviest' album is Undertow, which is really just a rock album with some metal influences. With their newer work, the heaviest song I can think of is Ticks and Leeches and it doesn't even begin to grasp the threshold of a metal song.

I'm sorry dude, but I will argue it till the death - Tool isn't a metal band. I don't know their specific genre, I find genres kind of pointless but they do have their purpose (finding similar music, describing a similar sound in bands), but calling Tool a metal band is near blasphemy (both for Tool fans, and metal heads alike).

To each their own dude, if we didn't have our own opinions we'd be nothing! This is one of those cases, keep the metal faith alive!

Nope. I stick with my guns, I got plenty of ammo to back it up too....

Tool ain't a metal band, and truth be told anyone classifying them as such is wrong, sorry. I admit, they have undeniable metal influences but that does not make them a metal band. Anyone who has listened to their complete discography (maybe half as much as I have) will realize this...

Spiral are you one of the tool fans that look for the deep philosophical meanings behind all of the songs? Would you be happy for us to bow down to your expertise tool knowledge? Well if the answer to the first question is yes then you are the type of tool fan that the band (Maynard mostly) absolutely hates.

this may seem as a attempt to flame, but it just annoys me when people drown others in their so called knowledge of music genres

Have you ever seen tool live?
