Spiral are you one of the tool fans that look for the deep philosophical meanings behind all of the songs? ... Well if the answer to the first question is yes then you are the type of tool fan that the band (Maynard mostly) absolutely hates.
Really? Maynard must hate just about all of his fans then... It has been said many times, by the band themselves, that Tool's music has deep meaning, but personal interpretation and reflection is where you are going to get such from; not from Maynard or from a friends explanation.

Nope, I haven't the privilege to see Tool live. They came to Anchorage when I was younger, but I was only 16 at the time and had no way to get there, or anyone to go with. Considering their tours are short, sporadic and only happen once every few years, it may be a while until I actually have the option again. I'm not too worried about it however, I have several bootlegged live shows, and had the opportunity to see A Perfect Circle in concert right after 13th Step was released

Alright, lemme step my big nose in here for a sec....

Spiral. You won't understand tool live until you see tool live. You could watch a thousand bootlegged concerts and still not get that vibration, that feeling of just raw energy flowing through tha crowd. Call it existential, whatever...I dont' believe in ghosts but that energy is real. I've seen 'em twice and would easily pay heavily to see them again.

However, they AREN'T metal. Never have been, never will be. Slayer, Sepultura, GWAR (seriously...bought it at six? c'mon now....lies are ugly and ugly ain't good) are metal and Tool isn't nor should it be, that. They are their own genre, undefined and unlabeled by any but themselves. If you listen to their lyrics (deep philosophicalness coming up...can feel Maynard giving me tha stinkeye ) they plainly state, in more than one way, "think for yourself...question authority."

Hence think for yourself. Don't buy into what people tell you is what, don't let someone else give you a label to stick on yourself, but more importantly don't give them tha power to stick someone else by listening or believing their bullshit. RIAA classes them as metal. Wiki classes them as prog rock. I class them as legendary and it really doesn't matter if anyone thinks i'm wrong because I like to use my brain and draw my own conclusions.

And now I will step away from tha mic, not to breathe but to cut myself out of this debate with one warning....if this goes down in flames over something as stupid as labels or what a rockstar thinks of his fans personally it will get shut down. It's come close....take this as tha last warning. Have fun....humans were bred to be great thinkers and to love a good debate as a way of communicating new ideas and expanding our racial knowledge....however we are also bred to fight.

Again, whichever one you choose is your decision. Go on, think for yourself.

all i gotta say is why is everyone bitching about ahh there metal or oh no there deff. not metal.. who fucking cares what genre they are.. you both like the band so drop it.. if he wants to call them metal so be it,, its his opinion on the matter.. just like you have your own opinion that they arent metal.. they are just a good fucking original band with tons of different sounds and influences.. call them what you want, but its not gonna change the way they sound...

Of course it isn't going to change how they sound but Tool isn't a metal band.

Well, his little comment about how the band, specifically Maynard, would hate any fan searching for philosophical, spiritual, or mystical meaning really irked me.

That's like saying "Hey, I'm an artist, I make amazing paintings - but please, only enjoy them to cover up your empty drab walls instead of enjoying the beauty they hold on the canvas"

i am a fan of all metal and progressive

opeth, all that remains, becoming the archetype, Arcane order... a few of my emphasis on many, fav. bands

spiral - killerchron was right. maynard really does hate all the little self-important, pompous fans that do as you do and read too much into the songs. have you ever thought that maybe maynard just sings about what he sings about? i think not. i mean, come on, kid. you need to stop being so pretentious about these kinds of things. you really come off as quite arrogant. and on top of that, you listen to power-metal.

How do you know who Maynard likes or dislikes? Are you him?

I'd rather come off as arrogant and right than ignorant and wrong.

And yes, I like power metal. Deal with it.

This whole argument about whether Tool is or is not metal only reaffirms the fact that their music (as with any good music) is ultimately unclassifiable, due to the large range of influences they draw from. Classification is the enemy of originality.

My own additions to the list: Iced Earth, SikTh, Sirenia, Arcturus, Soilwork, Limbonic Art and Emmure.
