I never got into At the drive in, but I'm a huge Mars Volta fan. They were infact the first band I saw in concert, a moment I will never remember.

I really dig De-Loused, the rest of their stuff is kind of meh, but its not bad, it's just no where near as good as De-loused. Perhaps I wil get some At the drive in eventually.

Funny that I see this topic right now, as I had a dream about TMV just last night

The Mars Volta are one of the best bands that are around today. After I heard only 30 seconds of the song "Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)" I went out and bought both of their albums (that were released at the time). I also bought Amputechture on the day it was released last year, and I plan on doing the same when The Bedlam in Goliath comes out this January.

Everyone always says that De-loused in the Comatorium is their best album by far, but I feel that Frances the Mute is just as good. Maybe it's the fact that I listened to Frances before I heard De-Loused, but I feel the music is just as strong. I can understand how the crazy noises and ambient sounds in Frances really put some people off, but I think it's necessary to have that break in between such intense songs. And "Cassandra Gemini" certainly is better than ANYTHING else they've done. That song is their pinnacle, and I doubt they'll top it any time soon.

Amputechture is definitely a much weaker album than either of their first two. Something about it seems much different, almost like it's a different band. The playing styles are all the same, but the overall sound of the album is different, and that isn't necessarily a good thing. Over at thecomatorium (a Mars Volta message board) I read someone's review of the album, and that person thinks that the mixing done after the album was recorded is the reason it sounds the way it does. I would have to agree. I wish the album was mixed to sound much more like De-Loused or Frances, but I guess TMV can make the album they want to make. Also, I don't like the songs on Amp as much, with the exceptions of "Day of the Baphomets" and "Viscera Eyes". Those two songs saved that album.

Looking forward to some serious TMV discussion.

What Bedlam songs have you heard so far? I've only seen the video the band made for "Wax Simulacra" , and that song was really awesome.

You guys ever listen to Scabdates, their live CD? It's decent but the quality leaves much to be desired.

I own Scabdates, and I've listened to it maybe twice. Half of it is just random noise, and the other half consists of about three songs that have sub-par sound quality. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except for a TMV obsessive who wants to collect everything the band releases. I think releasing this was a big mistake, they should have just done a conventional 2-disc live set.

Yes, I own all of their CD's as well. They are one of the few bands that I actually purchase all of their work. I even have a t-shirt I wear quite often.

Yeah, Scabdates was a big mistake. I just don't understand, when I saw them live they did have some ambiance noise but it was nothing like in Scabdates. Then again this was like right before De-Loused was even released I think, they were opening up for A Perfect Circle after they had just released 13th Step. I hadn't even heard they are releasing a new album until you guys mentioned here, now I have something to really look forward to!

You guys know about the 'concept' behind De-Loused in the Comatorium right? Here it is if your interested

Quote:
Based on a short story by lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala, and sound manipulation artist Jeremy Michael Ward, it is the hour-long tale of Cerpin Taxt, a man who tries to kill himself by overdosing on morphine. The attempt lands him in a week-long coma during which he experiences visions of humanity and his own psyche. Upon waking, he is dissatisfied with the real world and jumps to his death. The story of Cerpin Taxt is based on the death of El Paso, Texas artist (and Bixler-Zavala's friend) Julio Venegas. Coincidentally, one month before the album was released, the band's sound manipulation artist, Jeremy Michael Ward, died of an apparent heroin overdose.
I just listened to the album again today after a long time. I'd have to say my favorite track is definetley # Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt, and Cicatriz ESP. Ahh, such grand music!

A bit off-topic but I ran into this today as well, concerning APC and a possible reunion (Even better news )
Quote:
In an interview with Revolver, Keenan recently discussed the other members of A Perfect Circle's recent activities and also hinted the possibilty of a reunion:

The real problem with running Tool and A Perfect Circle at the same time was they both operate the same way. They're both live touring bands with a label, still working under the old contract mentality. So I thought it was time to let A Perfect Circle to go for now and let Billy explore himself. It's tough for a guy who went from being a guitar tech [for Tool] to being in a band with pretentious, famous singer and having to live in that shadow. It was important for Billy to go and do his own thing and really explore his own sound and let people hear what he has to say and how he would do it on his own, and then we'll get back and do some A Perfect Circle stuff.
—Maynard James Keeenan, Revolver, December 2007

Although Keenan is still involved with Tool and Howerdel is still working on a solo album, Keenan stated in an interview that A Perfect Circle would definitely reunite and record new material in the future,[5] but it is unknown at this point whether Iha, White and Freese will be involved.

Have you ever read the "book"? I found it online once in .pdf format. C O N F U S I N G as all hell! It's basically written in the same style that Cedric does the lyrics - all jumbled up and very stream-of-conscience like. I couldn't even begin to understand what was going on. All I know is that it's a sci-fi story that deals with a group of people called Tremulants (or was it Tarants?) and Cerpin Taxt comes to the rescue.

What are you guys' favorite songs from each album?
De-Loused - definitely "Take the Veil, Cerpin Taxt", I absolutely love the two different jam sections in the middle. The first is in an odd key signature and is very frantic, while the second is very subdued and has a kind of "No Quarter" feel to it.
Frances - "Cassandra Gemini", hands down. 30+ minutes of utter excitement and balls-to-the-wall playing. I love the crazy vocal effects when Cedric sings "There was a frail syrup dripping off his lap-danced lapel...". I can almost do that voice perfectly, and I love to sing that along with the album. It freaks my girlfriend out so much, I think it is hilarious!
Amp - This one I'd have to say "Day of the Baphomets". I really love Juan's bass solo at the beginning, and the percussion breakdown in the end? Priceless. Those two minutes are the high point of that entire album.

Have you guys heard the song "Frances the Mute"? It is really good, a shame they left it off the album.
