I love Frank Zappa!

My favorite songs are probably I'm the Slime, Cosmik Debris and Trouble Everyday.

My senior year in my journalism class we had to pick a political/social song and analyze it and present it. I picked the song Trouble Everyday, it was about the Watts Riots in California (1965).

Cool

Frank Zappa wrote the lyrics, "Watch out where the husky's go, and don't you eat no yellow snow!"

He was hilarious.......

Default Oh Yeah!

Saw Zappa many times back in the day...and even rang in the Bicentennial on New Year's Eve with FZ in '76 in L.A.!

I spoke to him for about a half hour on the phone once...as part of a radio interview and birthday special. High point of my career indeed! Gail set it up for me, and she was just as cool!

At one station I organized a 'Bobbin' For Franks' promo on Halloween night (Frank LOVED the Halloween shows!), where participants actually bobbed for hot dogs from a big metal tub with prizes stuffed inside 'em! That hadda GREAT turnout...and we gave away a grand prize of a complete boxed set of 'You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore'!

Yeah...I sure miss the man! Woulda made a good president maybe!

Why not ask the community if we like to smoke Marijuana while you're at it?

Must be those wacky lyrics!

Let me recommend his album 'Jazz From Hell'!

From Wikipedia...

Quote:
The album Jazz From Hell, released in 1986, earned Zappa his first Grammy Award in 1988 for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Except for one live guitar solo, the album exclusively featured compositions brought to life by the synclavier. Although an instrumental album, Meyer Music Markets sold Jazz from Hell featuring an "explicit lyrics" sticker (a warning label introduced by the Recording Industry Association of America in an agreement with the PMRC).
It ROCKS!

I'll have to check that album out Feorge Gorman. That is so cool you have talked to Frank Zappa and been to some of his shows!

Do you remember what he was like talking to, or what you guys discussed?

He was SO ...and I was SO intimidated!

I was only in the radio "biz" about a year ('88 maybe?)...and I wanted to do something special on his birthday on the 21st of December.

All I did was call Barking Pumpkin Records and told them of my plans to do a birthday tribute to Frank, and they gave the phone to Gail! She said call at such-an-such a time, and there he WAS! I turned on the reel-to-reel (no fancy digital stuff for MOIS back then!) and shared a GOOD half hour with him. The audio was edited, and I played it back between songs from 10pm-2am. Those particular hours because back then I could play 'Dynamo Hum' & 'Titties & Beer' after midnight!

Now, I'd heard of him making mincemeat of interviewers because of stupid questions...mostly folklore that never had a shred of truth to it, Like the "gross out contest" with Alice Cooper.

So I did my homework and just asked him questions pertaining to his albums and music-making techniques. I remember asking about his Apostrophe album (which some feel is his best work) and said something like "What is the apostrophe anyway?" And he replied slowly "Apostrophe...that's the little squiggle at the end of a word to indicate possession." We both chuckled after that! We also talked about his Synclavier...his audio playback device that was very "cutting edge" back then.

I dealt with Barking Pumpkin Records many years later with the promo I mentioned a few posts back...they were just AWESOME people, and gave me all kinds of stuff to give away!

I consider him to have been a genuine genius...both in his musical abilities and his sociological observations.

If you really want to know more about this guy than just the urban legend stuff, lemme suggest THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK! Although, it's LOADED with great road stories!

BTW...Zappa DID try , but spoke out strongly against it.

EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot! This is PRICELESS!
