Mucho Respecto
If the other people on this thread are anything like me, then we really don't care what they are saying. I just want it to sound cool, lyrical content is secondary.

that reminds me of the amon amarth show i went to a few months ago. the vocalist started getting us to join him in part of a song and he says "most of you probably know the words, and even if you don't, just pretend you do, it's death metal, no one can tell the difference anyway" hahaaaa, that was funny

Not I, the lyrical content is just as equal as the sound of the singer. They are both 2 of the most important aspects of metal, and they shouldn't compromise with each other.

but how can you understand what they are saying?
By listening? I've been listening to death and black metal for a long time and although it takes a listen or two, I can usually decipher and completely understand a singers guttural voice within minutes. It's not hard, it just takes practice -- like all things. I have a hard time listening to, and understanding some rappers, yet most fans of that genre don't. Why? Because you know what to expect, your accustomed to that sound and it becomes a part of you. It might also help if they rap or practice guttural singing (such as myself).

And by the way, I know just about every Amon Amarth song by heart -- and that's saying a lot considering they have 6 studio albums. They were one of my favorite metal bands for a long time, I have moved on since then, but nothing makes me head bang and become nostalgic like some good ol' 'Mount Doom'.

Oh yes, and for those Amon Amarth fans out there, they have a new album announced.

The guy from Amon Amarth has a super clear growl. Same with Corpsegrinder from Cannible Corpse. I love Amon Amarth, though. So Epic and yet, so tr00.

Moved on? Spiral, I'm shocked. Especially since I'm liking Amon Amarth more every day. I guess its just different musical phases we all go through. I really like that vocalist though. Easier to understand than most, and since all the songs are about vikings the lyrics are damn fun to listen to. "In Pursuit of Vikings" just has some wacky lyrics for a metal song, in my opinion. They're good at making me see vivid images in my head. When I listen to Amon Amarth I feel like I'm in that ship with them sailing across the ocean.

So do you tend to prefer bands who have \ someone who just sings over bands that have a musician doing the vocals as well? To me the guitars and drums are the most important parts, and badass vocals just help me enjoy it that much more. What about instrumental songs.

Yes. Moved on. There is better metal out there, at least I think so. I got bored of Amon Amarth because the guitar work is so repetitive. I am Norwegian, but the viking thing still gets old imo... Don't get me wrong, they are one of my favorite bands, but they don't hold a top spot like they did.

Aren't singers musicians?
I find all aspects of a band equally important. Sure, some parts might shine, for example the production values of Dark Tranquility, the shredding of Arsis or the singing of Mikael from Opeth, the imagery of Amon Amarth lyrics, but each instrument, be it drums, guitar, bass or the vocals are equally important in metal music. If it sounds good, it sounds good. Production value is also important, production largely leads to the desired atmosphere of the music and the emotions the listener feels.

I enjoy instrumentals more than most, infact some of my favorite bands (some not metal) are instrumental bands.

I don't listen to metal because it sounds cool. I listen to metal because of the technicality, brutality, and energy of the music. Nothing compares...

Yeah, Behemoth is great. I have a poster of them in my room, they make some crazy good brutal metal.

Their newest cd The Apostasy was pretty good, but I'd have to say Zos Kia Cultus is my favorite album

Behemoths last few albums have had some great album artwork imo

Have you heard of John Dyer Baizley? He is a member of Baroness and has done artwork for The Red Chord, Darkest Hour, Pig Destroyer, Ghengis Tron and more -- some real sick shit....

What are some of your guys favorite metal album covers?
