the other trees will hear it fall...it is a forest...trees are alive and, as many scientific studies have supported, trees react to sound...


look at in the sense of a revolutionary (which the saying most like stems from)...if a revolutionary makes a sound as he falls...and no one hears...will said revolutionary still make a noise?

Of course it makes a sound. Actually it is making sounds before it falls and after too. althouh very faint sounds compared to a falling tree or a tree hitting the ground.

I think we are getting to caught up with the tree itself. That part is irrelevant... The real question is "if no one hears it, did it make a noise?" 'It' meaning anything you wish... a tree, an acorn, maybe a cellar door for all you linguist.

I think the answer to that is… that we could not know. Some people take this question way too philosophically. If we are not present then we could not know. Why would the answer have to be either yes it did or no it didn’t?

Just because something usually makes a sound does not warrant that it will always make a sound. Thus, we are not capable of knowing rather something that usually happens will occur or not.

This reminds me of a Robotman And Monty comic strip I saw.

Monty wanted to know the answer, so he took a deaf beaver (which chewed the tree till it fell) and put a tape recorder on.
