|  If a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it, did it make a noise? I just want to hear everyones perspective on this classic question. Personally I think it says that the entire universe would not exist if it weren't for humans, because we are here to think and ponder and realize its existence. But, perhaps it would exist nonetheless. Any thoughts?..... |

| perhaps you dont understand what im saying.... A tree falling in the woods can be related to existence. If no one hears the noise, did it actually happen? The basic argument here is that if no one was there to hear the noise then it had no effect on anything and therefore there would be no difference between the noise existing and not existing. The person hearing the noise gives it meaning, because the noise will then be a factor in determining the future course of the universe, even if in a minute way. So, that fact that something exists or doesn't exist is determined by whether or not it will affect the future course of the unvierse. If no one hears the tree, then the noise would not matter, ignoring the fact that the tree prolly blew some leaves around when it fell and made vibrations and what not. So I can ask the same question about the universe. If a universe is formed in space and no one is there to sense it, does it exist? It's existence wouldn't really have meaning without some type of life, so whether it actually was materialized or not would be irrelevant to anything. It formed, did nothing, then unformed, having no meaning, and therefore it is the same as if it never existed at all. |
