Mushroom Man

So. 2027, the end of our planet as we know it. Why you ask? Well apparently our genius american scientists have a telescope that can see SO far from our planet that they have spotted a meteor big enough to destroy Earth. The story goes that the meteor will come between our planet and our moon, and that if it doesnt enter our atmosphere and hit us it will disrupt everything we take for granted that our lovely planet provides for us and catastrophic events such as tsunamis and killer UV rays will wipe us out if the rock doesnt do it itself.

I can see why this isnt a big deal yet, no one would care if they knew they were about to lose everything and go completely crazy. Riots would occur and crime rates would be statistically off the chart. Of course, another good explanation for keeping this quiet is that its completely bogus. I find it hard to believe that our scientists have a telescope that can see 20 years into the future (i know its not future so to speak, but im not sure how many miles away that would be). Thoughts on this?

Sounds fake (the telescope part), but the chances of our planet being nailed by a meteor large enough to destroy what we know are astronomical. I'm amazed it hasn't happened already.

I actually watched a video about this today. It was on discovery channel or somethin the vid I linked to has Great Gig in the Sky by PF playing. it's a pretty life and mind fucking thing to see. They say in the end of the vid that a meteorite(of this size) has hit the earth at least 6 times. I mean definatly not like tommorow or next month (since I wouldnt wanna die a virgin) but its just a mind fuck for me at least to think it could happen like tommorow it could hit CNN that in a week one is gonna hit.

Newtonian mechanics allows astronomers to predict the precise location of orbiting objects out far more than 20 years. I question that an object as small as a meteor could be seen at such a distance that it wouldn't arrive for 20 years.

If this object actually exists, it wouldn't take much to modify it's trajectory while it's still far away.

It's happened several times in the history of this planet. The most recent was 65 million years ago. It's what killed off the dinosaurs.

I actually did see a show about this on either The Science Channel or The Discovery Channel. It is true, and the scientists claim that the asteroid will come between the Earth and Moon. I don't remember all the details, though.

Even if they are right, it wont matter. As I've stated over and over again, the world will be ending December 21, 2012.

The asteroid is estimated to pass at a distance of 388,960km. The distance between the Earth and the moon is 384,403km. The moon's diameter is 3734km.

I'd rely on figures before I'd rely on the discovery channel. ...Those guys do ratings, not facts.
