Space is infinite therefore the number of planets is infinite therefore the chances of intelligent life on other planets is infinite. Sorry if someone else allready said this but is the facts.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. This could be true, but as far as the most recent developments in modern physics are concerned, the universe is most decidedly finite.

So no, these aren't "the facts". Sorry.

I'm going to have to go with WNB on this one. A whole lot of half-baked theories. Sure, for all we know they could be true, but then we could also be living in a giant pomegranate.

And you know what I say to that? Ockhams razor - the simplest explanation is the the correct one.

*sound of snipping in the background*

Oh, yeah. And WNB is also correct about the number of planets in each system, and the number of planets that can support life. Our examination of other systems puts this number at a LOT lower than the first poster suggested.

Now, don't get me wrong. I believe in other life in the universe. It just makes sense. But to suggest that there's a LOT of life in the universe... now that's just silly.

The thing about using 10% of our brains is false. We actually use all out brain, just a relatively small percentage at a time. If we could possibly use it all at once, however, is another aspect.

Are some of you actually saying that there's NO other intelligent species in the universe?? How could you be so closed-minded? In the whole universe there are billions and billions of stars and planets, and you think none of them are inhabited by other species? You really think that HUMANS are the supreme beings? Humans are stupid, bad people. If we're the supreme beings than I feel sorry for the universe.

Most have no planets and no moons capable of sustaining *our* life. Why does life on other planets have to be carbon-based life forms at our temperatures? Just because there's no life on the other planets in our solar system doesn't mean that there's some other form of life that would thrive at, say, -100 degrees C somewhere else in the universe.

There are millions of species on Earth, and only one is intelligent.
That's relative. How do we know that we're the intelligent ones? Because we have big brains and Technology? Or because we're aware of our own existence? Where was I going with this? I don't know. Bah.

Quote:
Faster than light travel is impossible, even light speed travel is impossible, and without that, species could not spread, as inhabitable planets are waaaaaaaaaaaaay too far apart to be reached without traveling many, many times the speed of light.
We don't know that it's impossible. It just hasn't been done yet.

Quote:
Using your own example against you...where did the martians go? That's right, if there ever were any, they died out long before they gained the ability to even travel to Earth, much less other planets.
Maybe we *are* the Martians who traveled to Earth. Or maybe there just never were any.

Quote:
6) You assume that species can advance and become more intelligent at a steady rate. This is obviously false, as there has to be a point at which technology cannot advance any further. It would not be unreasonable to assume that at this point, intergalactic space flight would STILL be impossible.
Why does there have to be a point at which technology can't advance any further? I don't think there is-- look at how many leaps and bounds were made in the early (and late) 20th cty. Compare one century to the amount of time we've been on this planet. Rather remarkable, I think.

You're right that life is extremely rare, but considering the vastness of the universe I don't think we can say that we're the only ones here. At best, all that anyone can safely say is a wholehearted "maybe."

And until the day when we can get out there and see for ourselves that there is or isn't life on other planets, all I can do is hope.

One more thing...

How do we even know that the physical world will be the same in other parts of the universe? All of our science and technology is based on the findings in this world, and what we can observe from the rest of the universe. Maybe the physics and chemistry in another part of the universe is radically different from what we observe on Earth.

And I conclude with a point made in _Contact_
==If alien species are so much more advanced than us, how come they haven't contacted us?==

Compare it to humans and the other forms of life on this planet, which we assume are much less advanced than us. Why would a human try to have a meaningful conversation with an ant? And how would we go about doing it?

Why would a human try to have a meaningful conversation with an ant? And how would we go about doing it?

lol, Mothman prophecies

I don't know ever since my little U.F.O. sighting that me and my friend had that i mentioned a few posts back, I honestly well I'm not gonna say im 100% sure that it was alien space craft =P but i honestly can't think of anything else it would be. I forget what its called but does anyone know about that story from the 1950s on the u.f.o. that was flying around the white house and it showed on radar and they sent out jets to go chase it but the jets couldn't keep up with it and then it just disapeared from the radar, something I remember hearing about people and also watched on the history channel about 2 years ago. Well based on seeing the u.f.o. the night me and my friend saw one, seeing how fast it took off from sitting completely still and remebering that story from the 1950s about how the U.F.O. outran the jets,I'm somewhat convinced I saw well, a U.F.O. or alienspace craft based on that small connection of how both being observed to have extreme speed and then just dissapearing. Sorry I keep mentioning this I just can't get over what i saw lol

lol, technology isn't all that complicated you know, space travelling? Nothing.
It's just an illusion these computers are sending out.
we are the ones being taken over, soon the machines will..
does not compute.

anyways aliens could be some evolved human species, and from the future or past because they got control over time travel.

you're saying that we are workin for aliens unconciously, so in some reason we could be workin for ourselves from past/future experiences that we need to change, even through history. as we speak.

evolution is all a lie.
don't believe everything you read.

it would NOT "outsmart" us. a dolphin is not smarter than us because it can kick our ass in the water. a shark can kick our ass in the water. a whale can. an elephant could maul us on land. a lion could. a bear could. WE are the smartest species on this planet, otherwise, we would not be the dominant species - we dominate this planet because of our brain, not our ability to kick ass physically.
