The curator though about it for a moment, then said, "Why, the one closest to the exit, of course!"

In other words, you do what you can. You save as many people as you can for as long as you can.

Can you imagine, for a moment, the trauma and guilt your sibling would feel knowing that you allowed five people to die just so they could live? And if they didn't feel anything... are they really worth saving?

You can't make value judgements on life. You can't say that this person is more valuable than that person, or persons. Movies like Sophie's Choice, Shindler's List, and the Gray Zone ask similar questions: who do you save, and at what cost? And the only answer any logical person can give is you save who you can, as many as you can.
