Where would we be without it? It would have to be a utopian society without it and what incentive would we have to build homes, etc..?

maybe that's why we're not living in a utpoia now, because people value work and material objects more than they should. what it the world was just several million people wandering the earth and only doing what they need to feed themselves and stay alive. it's the principle of both buddhism and taoism, keep life simple and you'l be happy.

Yes, we'll be very happy until we get violent diarrhea and realize that Pepto-Bismol (the only one that coats) hasn't been invented because there is no incentive to invent it.

We'd be living in grass huts at best, because there'd be no incentive for engineers to design materials to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

You can forget about electricity, too.

Greed is good. It's what drives humanity to accomplish... everything. You ought to read up on egoist philosophy sometime - interesting stuff that greed is.

well just by needing things such as complicated steel structures with ventilation to control the temperature around us and by needing pepto bismol should be reason enough to take this journey into the unknown of actualy being content and happy. my piont was that people value "things" too much and your post completely proved my piont, that fact you cant' live without air conditioning and pepto bismol is why some think that the week and shallow should die off and only the strong and content would survive. people could build thier own homes and hunt and collect thier own food, which would wipe out depression (a large problem in america toady) and bring in a new feeling of satisfaction and self worth. greed is for people who are weak and need to dominate others and things to feel important.

Ok. I don't about you, but I like all of the modern conveniences that greed has given me. I like electricity. I like being able to go to the store and buy a bit of dead cow, rather than having to chase down the bastards with a sledgehammer myself. (Cows can be nimble - no, really.)

You say that by hunting and gathering, and building our own huts, we'd wipe-out depression? Ok, possibly, but that's only because the people that are depressed would be too depressed to take care of themselves and they'd wither and die. So yeah, I guess that's one way of wiping out depression...

I guess it’s safe to assume that you’ll be moving to the woods of Wyoming and living off the land? Heaven help you if you fall and break your leg or something, since I’m assuming you’ll be forgoing medical science (as it’s development was also motivated by greed). Or what if you get cancer? Will you use a sharpened stick to cut the tumor out yourself? Damn, you're a real man, my friend.

...Wait a minute, Cap'n Taoist, why are you using a computer? Don't you know that a computer symbolizes everything that's "wrong" with our society today?? It's a machine built by greed! In the interest of curing depression and improving your own sense of self-worth, I recommend that you immediately smash your computer into a million tiny bits! It's the only way to truly achieve inner peace, pipegod-son.

P.S. You may want to at least consider taking some Pepto-Bismol with you into the woods - I imagine that your new diet of grass, sticks and the occasional squirrel won't sit too well with your bowels just yet... Unless sticks are already a dietary staple of yours. Good luck!

PPS You should wear safety glasses while smashing your computer – you could get a computer fragment lodged in your eyeball, and that’d hurt. Bad.

i can see your pionts, but the fact is that we both have different views on a utopia which is why neither of us will ever win this debate. i'm trying to live as much as i can the way that i'd like to but the world just doesn't let people do that, one day i may. you also may want to think about which one of us just went off on an angry rampage claiming that his idea of a perfect society is better and he needs his pepto bismol and which one of us was smiling calmly. think outside of the box man, dont just take what's given to you.
