To some. To some it isn't even proven yet.
That is a statement I see often and to be honest, it bugs me.

We are not destroying the planet. We may be making it uninhabitable for our species (and many others), but that is a horse of a different color than destroying it and if it happens, nobody to blame but ourselves (barring asteroid collision, etc.).

This planet doesn't even recognize we are on it. It's like a fly on an elephant.

Now, do I wish we would use more renewable resources and keep the natural beauty that is still (barely) around me?

True, but no one knows if that's because of our actions or because it's a natural phenomena.

I'm not convinced about global warming. It's just a big theory to me right now, even though others swear it's happening (as a result of human intervention and pollution).

Don't be too sure.

The reason devastating new diseases don't wipe out whole species is because elements of species live in isolated populations. A new disease might destroy one population and leave all the rest untouched.

Humans no longer have that advantage. We are, for the most part, a single global population. A sufficiently deadly disease could take us all out, or at least enough of us not to leave a viable population.

Consider a disease like AIDS. It has a ten year latency period between acquiring the virus and the appearance of symptoms. As of yet there is no cure. We are very lucky that it is transmittable only through direct contact with certain bodily fluids. Had it been an airborne virus, like the common cold, everyone would have it and the human race as we know it would not exist today. We've been lucky. We can't count on being lucky forever.

By the way, we're about do for a major comet strike...

In 2104, Emperor George Bush VI, "Ruler of All The Americas (The Canadians have a good laugh over that one!) and Defender of the Faith" will be sitting on the throne in the White House'O'God in Crawford, TX. All technological development ceased in 2050 when all books but the Bible were burned. The poor are lined up for miles along the fourteen lane highway leading to the "Pearley" Gates. As the Elect of God drive towards the temple in their stretch diesel H14 Hummers they toss out soy dog biscuits etched with bible verses.

One great advantage of the rejection of science is that every other nation on the planet has a better economy, a better standard of living, and a profusion of comparatively "liberal" ideas. When Al Queda was bought out by Exxon in 2032 there was a brief period during which the royal family had a tough time coming up with an enemy with which to terrorize the commoners. For a couple of years there was nothing but peace and the Bush power base seemed to be melting away. Then Dutch teenagers began flying their remote controlled jets over American cities, dropping pamphlets encouraging secular education and baggies of Amsterdam Hydro. Thus America acquired an endless list of "enemies". Just as Bush II declared in 2001, "If you're not on our side, you are the enemy!"

The decline of education has meant that as America's industrial machinery falls apart it can only be replaced by imported equipment. Almost all manufacturing has moved overseas. The rest of the world is so wealthy that it can afford to supply America's needs below their cost of production. They remember when America was the shining beacon of freedom for the planet, a hundred and fifty years before, and try to keep her afloat for sentimental reasons.
