That's exactly what I was going to say HappyMan.

Making others happy is a laudable goal, but if you do that without attending to your own happiness first, not only will you be used and abused your whole life by others who have no such selfless aims, but also you will never be as effective at achieving your aim as others who have the same goal but aspired to find happiness within themselves first.

What can bring greater happiness to the self than making other people happy?

Hey all, happiness is a state of mind. We might have a glimpse of some persons happiness and it might appear that we have influenced them to turn to that state of mind, but I believe they are there by their own decision and we just percieve that it is our being there with them that made them that way.

Indeed, I agree with the posts, however my original intention was to work out what other people's agendas are in life.

I believe that throughout my life I have been a generous, loving person, and, Solutions, you are correct, this has made me happy at times.

Only recently have I realised just how different people are and how difficult it is to completely satisfy other people, and so I reckon that it should be top of your list to make yourself happy, as long as any of your actions does not cause others unhappiness.
In my opinion I do not yet know myself completely, and maybe no one does (on the other hand maybe everyone does and I am just different), but I am learning what will make me happy and completely satisfied.
If I can live my life getting near to complete happiness, and helping others to do the same I believe that would be a life well spent.

I think I'm rambling now... ... I'm not even high...

Depends if you are narcissistic or not I suppose. It is a good feeling though to make someone else happy. And I don't think making happy means you have to submit to every whim they have, but just doing certain things. I guess the only real way to find out is to try out. For a week go around and just make others happy. Say nice things to them, compliment them, take someone out for lunch, give someone a flower or anything out of the ordinary. See if after a week you notice an improvement in your own happiness. I'm sure they are linked together. So I guess I'm with the theory that it's good to make others happy, because that in turn will make you happy. Only making yourself happy would be pretty lonely and depressing at the end of the day, no?

well, hm.
i really dont know how to answer that poll...
its hard to say if making yourself happy is always more important than other peoples happiness. are we not all naturally equal? then everyone is entitled to equal rights, and so everyone's happiness must be equally important.
i think thats agreeable...

so if my happiness is no more important than yours, how should i act?

but i dont think we should aiming to make ourselves and everybody happy. i think we all have (or are capable of having) a sense of what is really 'good'. i know that's pretty vague, but its also hard to say what is truly good.

i think following this idea of 'good' is more important than seeking happiness. doesnt goodness bring about happiness???
