Default Life - Good or Bad, discuss...

Now don't get me wrong, I think life is great, even more so since I started smoking, but...

For most people life is a lot of hard work (at least socially and financially), I will welcome eternal rest when I am (hopefully) presented with it.

I was just thinking, 'is the reason why life is considered so special, and so celebrated, merely due to the rarity of it?'
When you consider the odds stacked against life; our planet is the only one we know of to contain it, the millions of sperm fighting for a chance at it, and the fragility of our bodies.
Perhaps we love it only because of its rarity. Gold, diamonds and other precious stones are precious due to their scarceness, yet are really just interesting-looking rocks.

So while I look forward to knowing whether an afterlife exists or not, I don't mind either way, because life is hard, but it's special.

That's an interesting thought. Here's what I think about it. I love philosophizing(sp) about what may be, but the truth of the matter is that you live your life in what IS. You are alive, so you may as well live it and enjoy it. Now, as for whether life is "good" or "bad". We all hopefully realize that the universe is a much colder, unforgiving, and impersonal place than we'd all like to belive it is. There is no good or bad written down anywhere in some sort of universal commandments. We define our own good and bad. And if something is good by your definition, then it's good. and if something's bad by your defenition, then it's bad. Is it "Right" or "Wrong" to impose these beliefs on others? No, just as there's no good or bad theres no right or wrong but what we ourselves decide. See the great thing about the universe and the "law of the jungle" is that you don't have a choice but to live by it. Impose your beliefs on others or have others beliefs imposed upon you, that's the only "choice" available. Wow I've rambled. Sorry bout that. I'm busy forming my "universal theory/philosophy" and it's been leaking into everyhting I write lately.

Cool, I agree, and I had considered how subjective the ideas of good and bad are

The way I see life is that we have been given the chance to experience existance and non-existance, whereas most entities are non-existant, and so I intend to use this good fortune to its full potential. I intend to live my life in a way that I see fit and to help others to live their lives as they see fit.

^(note avoiding the use of the word 'good' )

DAMMIT! But I was talking about the last sentence, which i think is a nice quote :
"I intend to live my life in a way that I see fit and to help others to live their lives as they see fit."

I think this^ underlines selflessness which I have commented on in other posts.
