Default Would You Kill Yourself?

I'v noticed noone seems to be posting on these formums anymore which is a shame because this is my favourite topic so I thought i'd try and get some conversation started.

Sometimes I think to myself, do we only live this life to stay alive because we're scared of death because we don't know what happnes after?
A lot of people in this world are quite miserable their whole life but still keep on doing the things they need to do to stay alive. I am not one of these people but I wonder if we ever somehow find out what happens when we die and it's something like a better place would you kill yourself without a second thought?
Is this why we don't know what happens after we die?

Hmmm......who is to say that what happens when we die is the same for both those that die as fate intended, and those who take their own life? Just because dying one way leads to a certain result doesn't mean that every death will end with the same result. Maybe those that choose to die are damned forever, while those that live the life that was inteneded for them are somehow rewarded. I persoanlly would't bet the farm on there being just one after death option. I believe the way you live your life, and the way you die may all play a part in the afterlife.

Maybe it's just instinct that humans have a general aversion to suicide?

I think suicide is generally a very selfish act.

I can understand someone who is suffering from a debilitating or terminal disease, but most of the time it's for selfish reasons.

My son would be enough to keep me from doing it.

Nahhh, I could never. I just enjoy life too much, in good and bad times, it's all part of life, and I can most definitely wait till I die of old age to find out what's next, if anything.

Interesting concept troublemaker but think of it this way. Is that not an idea/beliefe you've given yourself to make you more motivated to live this life which has no purpose apart from enjoyment.

Mickety Mike, say you knew you could be in a better place if you died do you really think that this 'instinct' for surviaval would stop you from puttin a bullet through your head to make your life better? (let's say you hated life and didn't care that any loved one would greif over your death)

Default Hell no

I am incredibly strongly opposed to suicide. Even if I knew that the next life was better (something I was raised to believe anyway), I would never commit suicide. Everyone should live their lives as fully and passionately as possible until God or Nature or another human or whatever takes it from them.

I have a scar on my left arm promising life.

If I'm terminally ill and suffering, or staring something like alzheimers in the face . .. knowing that all that lies ahead for me is progressive dementia and eventual catatonia . . . then sure.

I'd rather go out on my own terms in that situation than put my loved ones through witnessing the slow, painful, disintegration of my "self".

Out of depression or self pity though? Never.

Oh, you mean this hasn't yet happened?

Well, that's why I said in general. Sure, we could look at a great many specific extreme scenarios where suicide might be considered, but in general it seems to me that people have a general aversion to offing themselves. I know I do.

I just can't imagine hating life so much that I'd want to end it - I'm kinda happy-go-lucky.
