Default Nihilism

You ever consider nihilism, in the sense that nothing really matters? (tell me if there's a better word) A million years is only a blink of an eye. People around the world suffer, but in the end it's only a blink of an eye, so why worry? This is not my doctrine, it's only speculation. But on what grounds could you hold it against someone if they felt this way?

If nothing matters then you can take no legitimate stand against evil, injustice or the suffering of others. To be a nihilist one hs to accept that purpose cannot be self driven-it is a call to seeking meaning from without and not finding it--of accepting that if meaning cannot be imposed from without-there is none.

Well when you get down to it, it's a pretty accurate statement. I mean, time is an illusion. While 90 years may seem long to us, it's really just a millisecond, a fraction upon a fraction, of the entire "age" of the universe. It's really more about relativity and from where you are looking at life from. The idea crosses my mind, especially when you hear of a lot of people dieing at once and people freak out or make it a big event, when in reality their death might as well be yours, it's so close in "time" compared to everything else that it doesn't matter. I guess the "self" and "ego" of humans is why a lot of people can't accept this doctrine.

"Time flies when you are having fun." We only notice time because things change. Time seems more rapid the faster events occur, and things happening seems to me to be the opposite of nihilism.

Nihilism is only true if your life is really boring.

So what's the difference between nihilism and apathy?

Apathy would be the lack of feeling, emotion, drive, whatever. Nihilism is a belief that there is no underlying truth, no purpose to us or the universe, no inherent value to things.

Okay, so I would say, kind of like HL, this doctrine of thought is ultimately the truth. But to live by it would require a person to not live in civilized society really, which is hard. This is because obviously it is not useful for a species to be designed with such thoughts.

I would say to live by it would require lack of empathy and emotion and to rely simply on logic, like a robot would. I'm reminded of "I, Robot," where the robot is trying to save two people from drowning, a child and a man, and it analyzes both beings based on vital signs and saves the one with the best rate of survival, the man (when of course emotion would try and save the child, it has its whole life ahead of it). Of course, that's also not living by this doctrine, but then again the robot is, by law, supposed to protect humans. You get my drift though.

In my opinion, You cannot judge someone's feeling about things, but you can when those feeling take over that person's views on what is right/wrong. (e.g. I don't care if someone wants to be a nazi, as long as they dont kill jews just because of the fact that they beleive they have to do that as a nazi)

So basically, nihilism is sufficient for apathy but not necessary, and apathy derives from nihilism but also derives from other things. I get that straight? =P
