Default Have you seen "Pete's Couch"?

The latest ONDCP propaganda piece.

The following is a transcript, followed by my comments (you can also find the PSA on youtube.com...)

Quote:
Pete's Couch Ad Transcript

(Scene opens with a guy sitting on the couch talking directly to the camera)

I smoked weed and nobody died.
I didn't get into a car accident, I didn't O.D. on heroin the next day, nothing happened.

(Shot widens to show the guy with two friends sitting on the couch)

We sat on Pete's couch for 11 hours.
Now what's going to happen on Pete's couch? Nothing.

(Shot now shows the guys on the couch in the middle of the woods with some mountain bikers riding by. Then to a basketball court. Then an ice rink.)

You have a better shot of dying out there in the real world, driving hard to the rim, ice skating with a girl. No, you wanna keep yourself alive, go over to Pete's and sit on his couch til you're 86.
Safest thing in the world.

(Shot now shows the guys on the couch outside a movie theater. The guy talking gets up from the couch and walks into the theater)

Me? I'll take my chances out there. Call me reckless.

For years, the various propaganda pieces spewing forth to excuse the heartless enslavement of our people (stoners) has told us that "weed causes violence..." "weed causes SEXUAL violence..." "weed causes sexual indiscretion..." "weed turns you to communism..." "weed funds terrorism..." "weed causes you to shoot yourself..." "weed causes you to have traffic accidents..."

And ignorant, frightened people have bought that bullshit.

But what contempt must the ONDCP have for its target audience to trot out this gem! Wherein, the hero admits that the entire family of antidrug propagandists have LIED! Not only does he think they lied, but that he has personal/direct experience that they lied. And then with speciousness and cupidy, the hero spouts more insipid lies.

I could write you all a list of successful people who smoked weed and went on to do great things... I think we all can. But that is beside the point. The point is, as a set up for lie, the ONDCP disavowed all of the lies they had said previously.

That is why they must be stopped. Not for any selfish reason. Not simply so I can smoke weed without fear of arrest. But because they have such a fundamental contempt for truth, that they are willing to create unreality to maintain their failed policy.

I have seen that commercial.

You are completely right. By running that ad, the ONDCP COMPLETELY UNDERMINES THEIR OWN CREDIBILITY. The blatent display of hypocracy is so infuriating...how can their little piece of propoganda be taken seriously after they pull a stunt like that....

So fucking irritating.

Thumbs down I know...

....this thread is a bit old, but I myself just saw that same stereotyped ad on TV not a week ago ; and my friend I was angry.

They know as well as you and I , that lazy people are just that, damned lazy people ! Do they really think all people are that dense? They didn't take two minutes from their (quite frankly, damned silly) buisness ; to think of the many people who actually use pot for a good cause, for real justified reasons ; who have enough problems, let alone some stupid ass to instill a guilt trip.

Real nice of them.

That's treason in my book, they need to be stopped.

The lies of the ONDCP in the past have proven to be very dangerous. They would tell people all the terrible things marijuana would do to you. Then people would see that those things didn't happen and go on to believe that the warnings about truly dangerous drugs were equally specious. I have no doubt that this was the root cause for a lot of deaths and destroyed lives.

Their new tack is, at least, a bit more realistic. There are a few people who waste their lives sitting stoned on couches. That's about the worst thing marijuana (combined with a total lack of motivation) can do to you. It's the equivalent of what the alcohol prohibitionists were pushing before the passing of the 18th Amendment: if you take a drink you'll wind up sleeping in the gutter. By pushing the worst-case scenario they hope to scare people away.

I don't think the "Pete's Couch" approach will be any more effective than the old scare tactics. Anyone who knows smokers knows that most are motivated and a few are drop-outs. At least the new approach won't be pushing people into the use of dangerous drugs. I think the ONDCP is running out of ideas.

guess things haven't changed much from the old school commercials of the past decades. turning into a werewolf after one hit is more believable than this crap.

I think all those lazy stoners out there, (myself included) would be MUCH more likely to get off their couches and go do something if they didn't face legal ramifications the second they step out door.

The only place I know of where it's illegal to have THC in your system is South Dakota. If you don't live in SD and you're not driving then there's nothing to worry about.

Ya...I smoked weed, and I didn't die.

I just sat and smoked on pete's couch for 11 hours.

We just sat there, safe and sound.

Ya know, I could of been out there in the real world. Playing bball in the ghetto with angry gangters, who probably all have guns in case of a unpredicted lost bet.

Ya know, I could of been at an ice rink with a cute girl, who, after a few hours, would take me back to her place and fuck me, giving me an STD.

Man, what a moron I am. Why smoke weed and become more appreciative and relaxed? Psh, I'd rather take my chances out there in the real world. Call me reckless.
