I live in such a rural area, there are no busses or commuter trains. The nearest supermarket is 30 miles away, the nearest small market store is almost 20 miles in the opposite direction. Also, 6 months of the year, it is way too cold for a motorcycle or scooter, let alone a bicycle. Hell, the nearest freeway is 80 miles away.

I commute 60 miles each day to work and while at work, I have been known to travel 400 miles in one day.

The hybreds are cost prohibitive to purchase right now (I expect the price to come down in a couple years), and all the economy cars have disappeared off the lots. To talk to a salesman about a car, if you want to think about it for a day, you need to put a deposit to hold the car from being sold - then you have only 24 hours. If you don't buy it by then, you lose your money and the car.

I think I will start biking. I have thought of the backpack thing. It could work. Would be a nice way to save on gas and work out.

The only thin is they might send me out in the field. I will need my car then. Unless I get them to tell me before hand when im going out.

I'm wondering if Segways will ever make a 'comeback'. hehe... I remember our local Police department got a few free ones to test out and they would patrol downtown whizzing around in those things. I couldn't help but smile, those things are nutty.
Our mayor did that once, gave the police some segways. When she tried to give them horses, it was kind of over kill though.

Cool

I live in a small town. I like it a lot I guess or I wouldn't still be here. My house is in town, but it's on the edge of the city limits and after dark the traffic slows down to a few cars an hour. Since gas has went so high I've noticed that traffic has really slowed down. I would say about half of what it was last year at this time.

The reason I started this thread was a picture that stayed in my mind of Downtown Saigon and it's streets during rush hour. There were cars and trucks of course, but the majority of transportation was bikes. Bikes everywhere and rickshaws instead of taxi's. The reason for this was Vietnam at the time was a very poor country. Bicycles were easy to learn to ride and cheap. A one time expense and you had a form of freedom.

Now, here in America we are facing the same thing. I don't think anyone is getting any raises on their paychecks to help cover their higher fuel bills. When cars go by my house now, it seems that they are full of kids and people, seldom the single rider out on a pleasure ride anymore. SUV's are selling cheaper than dirt and no one is buying them. They just sit in the yard with grass growing around them.

I have thought about another way to travel that I do have a little experience in.....Horses. I do believe it will be awhile before we see alot of horses, but maybe not as long as we think.......

Hi-yo Silver, away.......

I had seen a segment on the news where scooters are becoming the "in thing" for transportation now days caused by the rising of gas prices. Since I live about 40 minutes from my job I was thinking about it even though I would have to get up earlier to get to work on time. The very same day I saw a kid on a scooter...you know the one with 2 wheels that you stand on and it goes by itself. Well, I was thinking to myself that looks pretty cool.......slow but cool. As I was trying to picture myself on it he ate the pavement. He did the flying superman move on the pavement. I was saying to myself "Oh my god" and about that time the scooter took off on him and went out into the road....At that time I said to myself "Oh Shit"!!! He got up real quick and retreived his scooter with no injuries. Once I seen he was okay and noone was hurt, I couldn't stop laughing. That's when I said never mind, I don't think I want one if he was having a hard time with it and he was about 18 or 19 years old...Can you imagine a 41 year old woman on that thing?

Our Mayor of Houston and a few other City Officials rode their bicycle to work one day a few weeks back. I guess he did that to try to prove that he is supposedly on our side where gas prices are concerned......who knows.

I already have a small car (Honda Civic) and it just cost me $44.00 to fill up my tank. I thought I was going to have a corinary (sp?).

If you wanting to travel middle-distances and are not bothered about looking a mod then a scooter is faster than walking but not as fast as a car they have very good mpg but if you want more capacity then you will have to buy a small car.

Lol @ the people are to fat comment.

Lol @ the dude with a gnarley whipe out at a top speed of 2 mph.

The gas is really ridiculous today. Not to mention 6 months ago. I was watching the news, and the feds have finally publicly announced they are investigation to see if price minipulation is what's going on.

I'd also like to put Blame on the Bush admin. and there way of handling it. Let the 2% have tax cuts, and let the middle class make decisions on buying gas, or put food on the table.(not a coincidence that Bush and Cheney bot has ties to major oil companies)

I live less than a mile from my work. So just starting up my car and going there is nothing but a waste of money. So I walk. On a side note, I live on an Island so I need to drive a good way to a good food market chain with low food prices. Because the rise of gasoline prices equals higher prices in food transportation. So it will always be a lose, lose situation unless something drastically changes in fuel dependancy. If not, then the oil companies has the American/Canadian people by the balls.

In Europe I saw people well into there 50's in business suits riding around on their bikes, and thats how I plan to get around town for the next 3 years. I live on a college campus most of the year and I walk everywhere, and with a bike It would make commuting that much faster and give me more range. at home I will be riding my bike and since I work like 2-4 miles away it just makes so much sense. and Ded I know how those SUV drivers feel about the gas, cost me 76 dollars to fill up in the winter, before gas hit 3.50.

and if you live in a rural area I recommend to start looking into growing your own veggies and canning, can save you a lot of money.

I think it is catching on, especially with the scooters. I am seeing more and more peeps riding scooters in my town than ever before. I am doing my part to an extent as well. I just bought a Cannondale mountain bike, been riding it to work when I get the chance. I only live about a mile from my workplace, so its really nice. The only trouble is, with my job, I have to have a company vehicle to get to job sites and such. So its not really practical for me to ride to work, but I do get to sometimes, saving a buck or two along the way.
