The girl had taken her father to Quebec Superior Court after he refused to allow her to go on a school trip for chatting on websites he tried to block, and then posting "inappropriate" pictures of herself online using a friend's computer.

The father's lawyer Kim Beaudoin said the disciplinary measures were for the girl's "own protection" and is appealing the ruling.

"She's a child," Beaudoin said.

"At her age, children test their limits and it's up to their parents to set boundaries.

"I started an appeal of the decision today to reestablish parental authority, and to ensure that this case doesn't set a precedent," she said. Otherwise, said Beaudoin, "parents are going to be walking on egg shells from now on".

"I think most children respect their parents and would never go so far as to take them to court, but it's clear that some would and we have to ask ourselves how far this will go."

According to court documents, the girl's internet transgression was just the latest in a string of broken house rules. Even so, Justice Suzanne Tessier found her punishment too severe.

Beaudoin noted the girl used a court-appointed lawyer in her parents' 10-year custody dispute to launch her landmark case against her dad.

I think this is just asinine. Now the government (well, this is Canadian, but still) is trying to raise our kids too? Sheesh.... Talk about undermining a father as an authority figure, his girl is gonna walk all over daddy and his rules now.

What do you guys think of this? It says he didn't allow her to go on a school trip. My opinion would change if this is a trip to Chuckee Cheese or to the Canadian Aviation museum for example... Still, I think a parent has a right to decide when they should punish a child, not a Judge.

The article you posted doesn't provide the judge's 'reading', ergo we don't have sufficient information to render judgment ourselves.
Pretty basic stuff that...

It's not my business, it in no way effects me. Canadians should be free to deal with their parental laws in their own ways.

However, if you're asking what do I think about this in America? Unless it's Abuse, the government doesn't need to be intervening.

She needs to be hit across the ass with an extension cord. Now I'm a foot taller than my mom and definitely a lot bulkier but memories of that cord still keep me in my place.

I would never hit my kids for simply doing something wrong as I saw the error in that myself but I believe there is a time when grounding and taking away privileges might not phase kids, for their own good I'd call my then wife to spank the kids in that situation. God knows I'm too timid to even hear a kid cry...

Eh, we still slightly disagree but to each their own.

On-topic: I'm in complete disbelief that the daughter was even able to win a case like this. I have no idea what possible strategy she could've used without getting the dad in trouble with CPS...there has to be FAR more to this story...

Ergo my earlier post suggesting premature ejaculation on some people's part finding judgement based on the article presented.
I'm astounded really that there are so many responses here (judgments) so far that have absolutely no basis in fact. Fact, in this case, being the Judge's actual reading.

pictures of HERSELF, not the word "her," which means that she is the one posting the pictures.. "of herself" and he is trying to stop that.
