Why you would post statistics without even mentioning a source is just about completely beyond me, but let's see what we've got:

Quote:
Enlistees are often promised between $35,000 - $70,000 for college.

Don't dispute it...

Quote:
Only 35% of people enlisted in the military who were promised money for college do not receive ANYTHING.*

After reading the the paragraph you refer to, I'm unsure as to whether or not you actually believe people in these instances are even entitled to benefits. If so, I am astounded by your blatant disregard of the integrity and standards military members are held to (and don't make some wiseass remark about recruiters*). You don't get paid to wear a cool uniform and play with an M-16, you get paid to shut the fuck up and follow orders - the military is no place for opinion pieces, having "fun," or anything of the like. Getting an other than honorable discharge and still expecting the military to pay for your schooling is like skipping all of your classes and still expecting to be presented a degree.

I'm also curious as to where the number '35' came from. If it consists primarily of persons who received a discharges lower than honorable or some other other obvious reason (like, they didn't pay into the account), then I have to wonder why you would post such a blatantly slanted figure.

*As I said, I don't argue that many recruiters engage in sleazy tactics, but they do not reflect the military collectively. It is their job to get as many people as possible to join up, and I agree that sometimes the way they go about it is dishonest. However, you shouldn't judge the military based solely on its recruiting policy.

Quote:
The average GI bill that is paid out for so-called "college education" is around $7,000.
This also seems horribly exaggerated. Feel free to prove me wrong, though.

Quote:
But, while we're on the subject of being disfigured, there are still a lot of people who do end up getting hurt. And, because medical technology has improved so much over the years, those that get badly injured who would have died in the field 50 years ago are now surviving with serious impairments. So, yeah, not that many people have died in Iraq, but not all those that live are in good shape when they get home (moreover, even if they aren't physically injured, the prevalence of PTSD among returned soldiers is extremely alarming in and of itself).
Good point...but it's still a vast minority.

Quote:
*Lots of people do not receive money because they are forced to leave early because they "told" something they shouldn't have (you know..."don't ask, don't tell").

I'm not going to get into a "gays in the military" debate, because I agree that it is a ridiculous rule. However, a common sense element also comes into play here - "don't ask - don't tell." If you "tell," then it's likely that you are intentionally asking to be kicked out, which means you voided your end of the contract. If you don't fulfill your side of the deal, why would you expect any of the benefits?

Quote:
Finally, many people are excluded from receiving college funds because they are dishonorably discharged for violating some sort of order

And they absolutely should be excluded. A dishonorable discharge, even a GENERAL discharge, means you screwed up somehow. The military isn't about fun and games, it's a job that's meant to be taken seriously. Want your college money? Do the damn job you signed up for, and do it right. Very simple concept.

And again, are you actually insinuating that people who are DD'ed deserve the benefits?

Quote:
(one person I read about refused to chant "I want to kill Iraqis" while in basic training and was dishonorably discharged for it).

Until I see an actual source proving this, I call BS - this is one of the most far-fetched claims I've seen in a while. You have to fuck up BADLY to get a dishonorable, I would be extremely surprised to find that anything even remotely resembling this scenario actually happened. In fact, there is really no excuse to be discharged for any reason other than honorably or medically, because as I said, you usually have to work pretty hard at it to get a DD or BCD.

Quote:
Because they don't always fulfill those promises. That's what's wrong.

They don't fulfill them to who, people who didn't honor their service contract? What a surprise.

Quote:
If you and I entered into a contract stating that you would work for me for, say, three years and then I would in turn give you $35,000 for college, you'd be pretty damn pissed off if you did the time and then I didn't live up to my end of the bargain.

Yeah, and if I violated my terms by not showing up five days a month for those three years and still expected the $35K you'd tell me to get fucked, and I don't think many would blame you for doing so.

Quote:
No, you're right, no one forces you to sign the paperwork. But often times (not all the time), military recruiters leave out a lot of details.
Without question.

Quote:
**You may have heard of "Stop Loss." That's when the military illegally extends your contract and forces you to spend additional time in the service. There was a movie about it, and actually, it happens more than it should - you know, especially considering that it's illegal. But, you know, the government does what it wants. You going to sue the government in its own court for violating the terms of your contract? I don't think so.
I'm well aware of stop-loss. In fact, it may be you who needs to take another look at the statute - because this paragraph is loaded with fallacies, demonstrating how little you actually know about military enlistment. Stop-loss is in the contract, and is entirely legal - provided it is initiated within your original eight-year service obligation.

And by the way, people win cases against the government in court all the time. For someone who is aspiring to be an attorney, I'm surprised you would make such an asinine comment.

Quote:
People can and do make great money without college. It may not happen every single time, but not all people need to go to college. See here: 15 Successful Entrepreneurs Who Didn't Go to College.
There's a great saying to address this sort of proposal: "Some people grow up to become celebrites or run fortune 500 companies, but most don't."

The thing about college, is that it can't hurt. Even an associate's degree in liberal arts from the local community college can put you a big step ahead of the guy with only a high school diploma when it comes to getting a job. There's nothing wrong with getting some of your core classes out of the way now, that way, if you decide you don't want a degree you won't be out too much money, but if you do then you'll have a head start on it.

[Mod note: Andrew87, I merged your last two posts together as you and I posted at relatively the same time and you didn't see mine until after you posted. You were worried about posting an off topic after my warning, now you don't need to worry about it. - sec]

Ok people;

This thread asks: What is your occupation?

If you want to start a thread about the merits of a college education or a thread about the different requirements/beneifts of military life please feel welcome to do so, JUST NOT IN THIS THREAD.

You are all off topic (at least the last dozen or so posts).

Anything else that doesn't answer the original question, will be tanked for being off topic. Lets not hijack this thread.

Makes sense to me.
"Merits of a college education or a thread about the different requirements/benefits of military life" is a fascinating topic.

Instead of these last "dozen or so posts" being 'split' and "tanked" (should anyone stray once more) and instead of 'starting a new thread with that topic and losing the 12 or so long and interesting posts specific to it how about we make a new thread called 'Merits of various career path options after High School' and then move the 'last dozen or so posts' to it?

Seems easy enough and results in a win-win situation...

Sterbo;

I never said anything about splitting any posts, nor did I mention deleting or losing any posts in this thread.

What I did say, was:

I think it's been determined by both staff and the community that; THREADS EVOLVE.

Quote:
Just wondering what everyone's job is...or if you dont have a career/job state what you hope to be in the future...i dont have a job yet...i hope to become a substance abuse councelor since i lost my mom to an opiate addiction in 2006...now what are all of your jobs/careers?...or what do you want to become?...
The merits of a college education absolutely ties into this thread. I find it illogical a moderator would want to stifle conversation when the discussion is totally applicable here. Again, THREADS EVOLVE, like any good discussion does...

I have yet to answer the OP;

I am a student. I am heading into my 3rd year for becoming a registered nurse. I hope to work in an old folks home or rehabilitation center (as oppose to a Hospital, although I'm not leaving that option out, obviously). Half way there baby

I am a pilot. I fly a small, yet powerful single-engine aircraft for a doctor between a few offices in my state. My boss is completely fine with my cannabis use as long as it is not within "working hours" and I'm very thankful for that. Unfortunately for him (I'm a damn good pilot mind you), I'm moving to Alaska in 3 weeks so on with the job hunting again!

I got my info from counter recruitment workshops, because I'm just that against the Iraq War. But since you haven't had the pleasure of attending those, you may do a little digging here and find what you're looking for.

I would respond to the rest of your post, but then I would risk being offtopic or whatever. PM me or start a new thread if you want to talk about the military's policies.
