| My brother called me up about a week or two ago and asked if I wanted to go fishing for King Salmon on Lake Michigan. Being a fisherman that hasn't been fishing in two years I readily agreed, not once worrying about what I needed to get/bring or time/place. This was gonna happen. I spent tha next two weeks securing a day off work and figuring out schedules and then tha big day came. I spent tha night at my brother's house, crashing on his floor (pissed his wife off. she'd expected me to sleep in tha guest room) and waking up around 1:30 am. So excited, I jumped right up and was ready almost instantly. We swooped up his accountant and tha three of us headed north for an hour and a half drive. Pulling up to tha dock, I realized that this was alot bigger than I had imagined. Sitting in front of us were dozens of charter boats, all ~35ft and all rigged to catch. I climbed aboard tha King Olaf III: ![]() 6 Miles out into Lake Michigan at what I heard was ~ 200ft of water we started dropping lures and counterweights. Within an hour we were hauling in some huge chinook salmon, my brother-in-law (married to my sister-in-law) and my brother were talkin some serious smack about catchin those big ones when I noticed a rig jigglin. I grabbed it out of it's socket and began to reel. Soon I felt tha captain right behind me, talking me through my first deep water catch. "Smooth reeling. Let 'em fight ya. Tire him out. Get him to tha middle of tha boat. Great job" and whatnot. Soon I had a monster fish looking up at me from tha water, thrashing for his survival. Captain Lucas dipped his net in tha lake and pulled up tha biggest Rainbow trout he'd seen all season, and as he was bringing it aboard, tha damn thing went vertical and skipped out of tha net. Luckily it was tangled up in fishing line at that point and Cap Lucas was able to flip it in for tha catch. Everyone wanted pics of me holding it, so I stood there, arms and fingers throbbing with this in my hands: ![]() I gotta say, it was an experience that will not only taste good on my plate tonight, but has spurred me onto some life changes. If y'all are in tha area, north Illinois or southern Wisconsin, be sure to check these charters out. |

| Nice catch man! She looks like a true beaut! Maybe some day you and I can go fishing together... of course we like to do it out on the open ocean here, not tiny little puddles. ![]() Think you can handle reeling in a 80lbs salmon? That guy looks like a lil' goldfish in comparison. Hehe, I bet he still tasted like heaven though!!! How'd you cook him up? What'd he weigh? Hm, so I Wiki'd Chinook Salmon, I had remember hearing on a boat thats another term for ol' King but is a term used in the lower 48. Apparently Chinook salmon (and Cohos) were transplanted to the Great Lakes to control alewife populations. I didn't know that, pretty cool. ![]()

| Funny thing is, this trip came about due to a successful Coho trip my bro took in May. So last night I cooked it up for a nice romantic dinner for me and tha wife. Oven roasted it with some simple salt and pepper after a quick sear in some Lemon and Garlic infused oil. Covered it all with a nice lemon/dill gravy. Had some snap beans and Mac 'n Cheese (which my wife considers haute cuisine). Awesome to eat something that was swimming just yesterday. No fish ever tastes better |
